OpenAI: Acquisition Of AI Security Platform Promptfoo To Strengthen Enterprise Agent Testing

By Amit Chowdhry • Today at 12:59 AM

OpenAI announced that it plans to acquire Promptfoo, an AI security platform focused on testing, evaluating, and securing AI systems during development. The company said Promptfoo’s technology will be integrated into OpenAI Frontier, its platform for building and operating AI coworkers within enterprise environments.

Promptfoo provides tools that help organizations identify vulnerabilities in AI applications before deployment. As enterprises increasingly embed AI agents into real-world workflows, OpenAI said systematic evaluation, security testing, and compliance oversight are becoming essential requirements for production deployments.

The Promptfoo platform enables automated testing and red-teaming of large language model applications to uncover risks such as prompt injections, jailbreak attempts, data leakage, tool misuse, and other forms of unsafe or out-of-policy behavior. OpenAI said these capabilities will become native features within Frontier, allowing companies to test and secure agent systems directly within the development environment.

Promptfoo was founded by Ian Webster and Michael D’Angelo and offers both enterprise tools and a widely used open-source command-line interface and library for evaluating LLM applications. According to OpenAI, the company’s tools are already trusted by more than 25 percent of Fortune 500 companies.

Following the acquisition, OpenAI said it plans to continue supporting and developing the open-source Promptfoo project while expanding enterprise capabilities within Frontier. The integration will also introduce stronger reporting, traceability, and governance features designed to help organizations monitor AI system changes over time and meet emerging regulatory and compliance requirements.

OpenAI said embedding security and evaluation tools directly into development workflows will allow organizations to detect and remediate risks earlier in the AI lifecycle, improving reliability and accountability as AI agents become more connected to real data and operational systems.

The acquisition has not yet closed and remains subject to customary closing conditions.
