OpenAI has appointed David Vélez and Robin Vince to the boards of the OpenAI Foundation and OpenAI Group PBC. The additions bring senior leadership experience spanning digital banking, financial infrastructure, risk management, institutional governance and technology-driven transformation.
Vélez is the Founder, Chairman and Global CEO of Nubank. He founded the digital financial services company in 2013 after experiencing the complexity and cost of traditional banking in Brazil.
Under Vélez’s leadership, Nubank has grown to more than 135 million customers and expanded access to financial services across Latin America. The company is also pursuing expansion into the United States after receiving conditional approval to establish a U.S. national bank.
Before founding Nubank, Vélez was a partner at Sequoia Capital focused on Latin America. His earlier experience includes roles in investment banking and growth equity at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and General Atlantic.
Vélez and his wife, Mariel Reyes, also lead VélezReyes+, a philanthropic platform supporting education, democratic governance and other initiatives in Latin America. OpenAI said this experience will contribute to the Foundation’s work involving access and economic opportunity.
Vince is Chairman and CEO of BNY, a global financial services company with a history spanning more than 240 years. Since becoming CEO in 2022, he has worked to simplify the company’s operating model and increase investment in artificial intelligence, data and technology.
Before joining BNY, Vince spent 26 years at Goldman Sachs. His leadership positions included Chief Risk Officer, Treasurer, Head of Operations, Chief Operating Officer for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region and CEO of Goldman Sachs International Bank.
Vince also serves on the boards of the Hospital for Special Surgery and the Perelman Performing Arts Center. He participates in several business and financial industry organizations, including the Business Roundtable, the Financial Services Forum and the International Advisory Board of the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
OpenAI said Vélez and Vince bring complementary perspectives on using technology to reshape established industries while maintaining governance, resilience and long-term institutional discipline. Their appointments are also intended to support OpenAI’s work with businesses and users internationally.
