OpenAI announced that it has agreed to acquire Astral, a company known for building widely used open-source Python developer tools, as part of its strategy to expand its Codex platform into a full software development lifecycle solution.
Astral is the creator of tools such as uv, Ruff, and ty, which are widely adopted across the Python ecosystem to improve dependency management, code quality, and type safety. These tools are used in millions of developer workflows and have become foundational to modern Python development.
OpenAI said the acquisition will accelerate the evolution of Codex beyond code generation into a more comprehensive system capable of planning changes, modifying codebases, running tools, verifying outputs, and maintaining software over time. Codex has already seen significant momentum, with more than 2 million weekly active users and rapid growth in both usage and adoption this year.
The company emphasized that it will continue supporting Astral’s open-source projects after the transaction, reinforcing its commitment to the developer community. By integrating Astral’s tooling and engineering expertise, OpenAI aims to enable AI systems to work more directly within the tools developers already rely on daily.
Python remains one of the most widely used programming languages globally, powering applications across artificial intelligence, data science, backend systems, and developer infrastructure. OpenAI believes that combining Astral’s capabilities with Codex will help developers move faster while maintaining reliability and performance across their workflows.
The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Until the deal closes, OpenAI and Astral will continue to operate as independent companies. Following completion, Astral’s team is expected to join OpenAI’s Codex group, with deeper integrations planned over time to enhance how AI collaborates across the development lifecycle.
