OpenAI Buying Sky Maker Software Applications

OpenAI announced that it has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, the company behind Sky, a natural language interface for macOS designed to bring AI assistance directly into users’ daily workflows. The acquisition aims to enhance ChatGPT’s integration with desktop environments and improve how people interact with AI on their computers.

Sky, known for its deep macOS integration, allows users to interact with applications through natural language. The AI-powered assistant can understand what’s on a user’s screen and take context-based actions—whether it’s writing, coding, planning, or managing tasks. The full Sky team will be joining OpenAI as part of the acquisition.

With this move, OpenAI plans to weave Sky’s capabilities into ChatGPT, reinforcing its goal of creating AI interfaces that go beyond text-based prompting toward more dynamic, context-aware computing experiences.

Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, said the acquisition strengthens the company’s long-term vision.

The acquisition was led by Nick Turley and Fidji Simo and approved by the independent Transaction and Audit Committees of OpenAI’s board of directors. OpenAI noted that an investment fund associated with CEO Sam Altman held a passive investment in Software Applications Incorporated.

The company stated that more updates will follow as it integrates Sky’s features into ChatGPT.
