OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Health, a dedicated experience within ChatGPT that’s designed to help people feel more informed and prepared when navigating health and wellness questions. The company said health is already one of the most common uses of ChatGPT, with more than 230 million people globally asking health and wellness questions each week, and Health is intended to make those conversations more relevant by allowing users to securely connect health information and apps.
ChatGPT Health is positioned as a companion to clinical care, not a replacement. OpenAI said the experience is not intended for diagnosis or treatment, but instead to help users understand information over time, interpret materials like test results, and prepare for medical appointments. Health is built as a separate space inside ChatGPT, with additional privacy protections designed specifically for sensitive health data, and OpenAI said Health conversations are not used to train its foundation models. If a user starts a health-related conversation in regular ChatGPT, the company said it may suggest moving the conversation into Health for the added protections.
To address fragmented health information across portals, PDFs, notes, wearables, and apps, Health allows users to connect medical records and wellness apps so responses can be grounded in a person’s own data and context. OpenAI said medical record access for trusted U.S. providers is enabled through a partnership with b.well, and users can remove access at any time. The company also highlighted integrations with Apple Health and other wellness apps, emphasizing that apps require explicit permission to access health data even if they are connected elsewhere in ChatGPT, and that they undergo additional security review for inclusion in Health.
On privacy and controls, OpenAI said Health content is stored separately from other chats, with separate memories so health context stays contained. The company said Health can use limited non-Health context when helpful, but Health memories and files do not flow back into non-Health chats, and non-Health chats cannot access Health data. OpenAI also said conversations and files across ChatGPT are encrypted in transit and at rest, and Health adds additional purpose-built encryption and isolation for compartmentalization.
OpenAI said Health was developed in close collaboration with physicians, citing work with more than 260 physicians across 60 countries and feedback on model outputs more than 600,000 times. The company also described HealthBench, a physician-informed evaluation framework that scores responses based on clinical quality criteria such as safety, clarity, appropriate escalation, and respect for individual context.
Access is rolling out gradually, with OpenAI saying it is starting with a small group of early users to refine the experience. Users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are eligible, with broader availability planned as the product expands to web and iOS. OpenAI noted that some medical record integrations and certain apps are U.S.-only, and that Apple Health connectivity requires iOS.
