The OpenAI Foundation has announced plans to invest at least $1 billion over the next year, marking a significant expansion of its philanthropic efforts as it ramps up operations following OpenAI’s recent recapitalization.

The investment is part of a broader $25 billion long-term commitment aimed at advancing life sciences, economic opportunity, AI safety, and community resilience. The initiative represents a major shift for the Foundation, which had previously operated at a much smaller scale, and reflects its access to substantial new resources tied to OpenAI’s restructuring into a public benefit corporation.

The Foundation outlined four primary focus areas for the funding. In life sciences and curing diseases, it will prioritize accelerating medical research through AI, including efforts to better understand Alzheimer’s, expand access to high-quality public health datasets, and advance treatments for high-mortality and underfunded diseases. The organization believes AI can help speed up scientific discovery, lower the cost of drug development, and improve patient outcomes.

In jobs and economic impact, the Foundation has begun working with civil society groups, economists, policymakers, and labor organizations to explore solutions to workforce disruption and economic transformation driven by AI. Specific programs are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

The AI resilience initiative will focus on mitigating risks associated with increasingly capable AI systems. Early priorities include safeguarding children and youth, strengthening biosecurity preparedness, and improving AI model safety through independent evaluations, standards development, and foundational research.

The Foundation will also continue investing in community-based organizations, recognizing their role in helping people adapt to technological change and benefit from AI advancements. This includes ongoing support through initiatives like its People-First AI Fund.

To support the expanded scope, the Foundation is building out its leadership team. Bret Taylor is overseeing the effort, with Jacob Trefethen joining to lead health-focused initiatives and Wojciech Zaremba heading the AI resilience program. Anna Makanju is set to join in mid-April to lead work supporting nonprofits and civil society organizations.

The Foundation emphasized that its mission is to ensure artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. While AI offers the potential for breakthroughs in healthcare, education, and economic productivity, it also presents new challenges that require proactive solutions. Through this expanded investment strategy, the organization aims to both accelerate progress and address emerging risks as AI continues to evolve.
