Jason Boehmig announced that he has joined OpenAI to lead product for the legal vertical, marking a new chapter after spending more than a decade building contract lifecycle management company Ironclad.
In a LinkedIn post, Boehmig said he was beginning his first day at OpenAI and reflected on his entrepreneurial journey. Twelve years ago, he left his position as a law firm associate to launch Ironclad as a solo founder while carrying $200,000 in student loan debt and limited coding experience. At the time, legal technology was viewed by many investors as an unattractive market, making fundraising and growth particularly challenging.
Boehmig credited several early supporters for helping him succeed, including Nell Newton, Ted Wang, and Jesse Beyroutey, who encouraged his interest in technology, opened doors in Silicon Valley, and provided early funding for the company.
Since its founding, Ironclad has grown into a major legal technology platform that manages billions of business contracts for organizations including L’Oréal, Shell, and The New York Times. Boehmig noted that the company has expanded from its origins in his apartment in Potrero Hill to a global organization with more than 700 employees, hundreds of millions of dollars in recurring revenue, and continued rapid growth driven by artificial intelligence.
Boehmig also praised Dan Springer, saying the company’s leadership team and employees made it possible for him to take on a new role at OpenAI while Ironclad continues to scale.
Looking at the broader legal industry, Boehmig highlighted the transformation that has occurred over the past decade. He pointed to law firms modernizing their operations, general counsel and legal operations teams embracing AI, state bar associations and pro bono organizations exploring ways to close the access-to-justice gap, law schools rethinking legal education, and a growing ecosystem of legal technology startups.
At OpenAI, Boehmig said he hopes to support and strengthen the legal technology ecosystem in the same way that early mentors and investors supported him. He emphasized that no single organization can transform the industry alone and expressed a desire to work closely with builders, lawyers, and innovators to ensure AI is deployed responsibly and for the benefit of society as a whole.
KEY QUOTES:
I feel lucky to be here. Twelve years ago I quit my job as a law firm associate to start a company called Ironclad. I was a solo founder with $200,000 in student loans hanging over my head, and on top of that I could barely code. I was also working in a space that investors considered a wasteland, building legal technology, selling to lawyers. It felt like the odds were against me.
In many ways, what I want to do at OpenAI is believe in this ecosystem the same way that Nell, Ted, and Jesse believed in me. It’s a mistake to believe that any one player can do it alone, even a frontier lab. So I want to hear from you, the builders. I’ve always admired the creativity and civic mindedness that lawyers possess. I know that together, we can harness the power of AI to be a force for the good of all society, not just the top.
I can’t think of anything I’d rather work on.”
