OpenAI Launches Health In ChatGPT

OpenAI announced the launch of Health in ChatGPT to U.S. users, allowing people to securely connect Apple Health and supported medical records so that ChatGPT can help them understand their health information in context, track changes over time, and have more personalized conversations. The feature is rolling out today to logged-in ChatGPT users 18 and older in the U.S. on web and iOS, across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, though it is not yet available in Codex.

OpenAI said more than 300 million people turn to ChatGPT with health-related questions each week, but the relevant context behind those questions is often scattered across patient portals, medical records, apps, and wearables. With permission, ChatGPT can now draw on connected information, such as medications, lab results, recent visits, sleep, and activity, to help users compare new results with prior tests, summarize changes since a last appointment, or explore how factors like sleep and activity relate to their routine. The feature builds on an earlier, more limited health experience that required visiting a separate space within ChatGPT; OpenAI found that more than 70 percent of health-related conversations among early testers happened outside that dedicated space, prompting the company to let Health information carry across ordinary conversations instead.

OpenAI said it has been improving the models behind health conversations with dedicated training and feedback from physicians. GPT-5.5 Instant, available to free users, made gains in recognizing when urgent care may be needed and explaining complex information clearly, while GPT-5.6 Sol, available to paid users, builds further on that performance and outperformed GPT-5.5 on HealthBench Professional, an evaluation of AI performance on challenging health tasks developed with input from hundreds of physicians worldwide. The company said physicians extensively tested Health in ChatGPT before release, though it cautioned that ChatGPT can still make mistakes and does not replace the care and judgment of qualified medical professionals.

On privacy, OpenAI said connected medical records and Apple Health information, along with conversations that use that data, are not used to train its foundation models or to target ads, regardless of a user’s model-training settings. Users control when ChatGPT can access connected health information, with permission prompts appearing by default before each use unless a user chooses to always allow access, and can disconnect accounts at any time, after which synced data is deleted from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days. OpenAI said it has also built in additional safeguards to prevent Health information from being inadvertently disclosed through other connected plugins, and continues to test those protections through dedicated red-team exercises.
