Oppenheimer & Co. has added former University of North Carolina basketball standout Joel Berry II as a Financial Advisor with the Robinson Private Client Group in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, expanding the team’s focus on athletes and participants navigating the evolving Name, Image, and Likeness landscape.

The Robinson Private Client Group is led by Tanner G. Robinson, Managing Director and Financial Advisor, and advises high-net-worth individuals and families, elite athletes, institutions and corporations.

As of June 30, 2026, the group advised on more than $6 billion in client assets.

Berry joins Oppenheimer after several years with Truist Financial and will focus in part on serving current and former athletes, including high school and college student-athletes dealing with the growing financial opportunities associated with NIL and revenue sharing.

His background gives him experience with the athlete financial lifecycle from both sides of the relationship.

Before entering wealth management, Berry was a four-year starter and team captain for the University of North Carolina men’s basketball program. He helped lead UNC to the 2017 NCAA national championship and was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player.

Berry later played professional basketball and currently works as a commentator for the ACC Network.

That firsthand experience could be particularly relevant as young athletes increasingly encounter meaningful income, endorsement opportunities and financial decisions earlier in their careers.

The Robinson Private Client Group combines investment management with financial planning and a high-touch service model. Adding Berry gives the team another advisor who can work with athletes while understanding the pressures and rapidly changing circumstances that can accompany athletic success.

Berry has already worked with professional players as well as high school and collegiate student-athletes adjusting to NIL-related financial opportunities.

Oppenheimer is positioning the addition as part of its broader effort to give advisors the resources needed to build specialized practices around distinct client groups.

For the Robinson team, Berry’s addition expands its ability to serve athletes while maintaining its broader focus on affluent families, business owners, institutions and corporations.

Oppenheimer provides wealth management, securities brokerage and investment banking services through Oppenheimer & Co. and related businesses.
