Optain Health Acquires EyePACS To Expand Retinal Imaging Access In Primary Care

By Amit Chowdhry ● Nov 10, 2025

Optain Health announced the acquisition of EyePACS, a leading U.S. teleophthalmology network with more than twenty years of community-based screening experience. The combination brings together Optain’s artificial intelligence, robotic retinal imaging technology, and rapidly growing teleophthalmology capabilities with EyePACS’s established nationwide clinical screening footprint. The integrated organization aims to expand early detection of eye and systemic diseases in primary care settings across the United States and globally.

EyePACS has operated screening programs across more than 740 clinical sites, including federally qualified health centers, county health systems, and home health programs. The platform has screened 1.5 million patients and identified more than 140,000 individuals at risk of severe sight-threatening disease. Optain’s technology is designed to enhance this network by enabling high-quality retinal imaging without dilation, specialized operator expertise, or dedicated ophthalmology equipment, making advanced screening possible wherever patients receive care.

The acquisition formalizes a partnership that has been underway for two years. The combined team is focused on preventing avoidable blindness and improving population-level health outcomes through earlier detection and intervention. EyePACS will continue to operate its platform as usual to ensure continuity for existing provider partners. Over time, Optain plans to integrate both platforms into a unified solution that supports clinicians with rapid image capture, specialist grading, and seamless workflows.

The unified platform is positioned to support the broader adoption of retinal screening by offering portable and easy-to-use imaging technology in primary care. The system allows imaging to be performed at the point of care through a lightweight robotic camera. Multilingual patient guidance supports accessibility for diverse populations. Specialist multi-condition grading supports the detection of diabetic retinopathy and other conditions. The system connects directly to major electronic health record systems and supports population health analytics programs.

Optain’s platform is currently deployed at 200 provider sites globally, with more than 1,000 additional deployments in planning, including seven U.S. health systems and a major national primary care group. The combined organization intends to expand into additional community health systems and international markets.

Both organizations have active research programs in retinal imaging and the detection of systemic diseases. By combining research capabilities, data infrastructure, and clinical screening experience, the partnership aims to accelerate innovation in oculomics and advance the use of the eye as a non-invasive window into whole-body health.
