Oral Biolife Awarded NIH Grant To Advance Piezoelectric Regenerative Platform For Peri-Implantitis

Oral Biolife, a biotechnology company developing a first-in-class piezoelectric regenerative platform designed to stimulate new bone formation, announced that it has been awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health through the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to investigate its technology as a potential non-surgical treatment for peri-implantitis.

The NIH-supported research expands evaluation of Oral Biolife’s regenerative technology beyond periodontal bone regeneration and into another dental indication involving progressive bone loss around dental implants.

Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory condition affecting tissue surrounding dental implants that can lead to loss of supporting bone and eventual implant failure. Current treatment can require surgical intervention, creating demand for less invasive approaches that can address both inflammation-related disease progression and associated bone loss.

The study will be led by Ronaldo Santana, DMD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology at Temple University’s Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry, who will serve as principal investigator.

Oral Biolife’s lead human product, Ambrilux Dental Gel, is being developed for periodontal bone regeneration.

The company’s proprietary piezoelectric platform is designed to convert naturally occurring mechanical forces into localized bioelectric signals that stimulate physiological pathways associated with bone formation.

The NIH-funded peri-implantitis program will evaluate whether the same regenerative mechanism can be applied to bone loss around dental implants, potentially expanding the technology into another important area of unmet dental need.

The research also supports Oral Biolife’s broader strategy of developing its technology as a regenerative platform that can address multiple bone-regeneration indications, rather than a single periodontal application.

Potential future development areas include additional dental and craniofacial indications, as well as orthopedic applications involving bone regeneration.

Oral Biolife also has a veterinary product, Restoris, which launched in 2025.
