Paragon Capital Management has appointed Trevor Lau as its first Chief Commercial Officer, creating a new senior leadership role as the multi-asset investment manager expands its client franchise, fundraising activities and strategic partnerships across Asia.
Lau brings more than 20 years of experience across private banking, wealth management and investment advisory, giving Paragon an executive with extensive exposure to high-net-worth individuals, institutional investors and other sophisticated clients.
He most recently served as CEO of Azura Investment Partners, where he gained senior leadership experience overseeing an investment management organization and working with clients across the wealth and investment landscape.
Earlier in his career, Lau held senior positions at several of the world’s largest financial institutions, including Credit Suisse, UBS and Citigroup Private Bank.
Those roles provided him with experience across global private banking, client advisory and investment services while building relationships with investors and financial professionals in multiple markets.
At Paragon, Lau will lead the firm’s commercial strategy and take responsibility for a broad range of activities spanning business development, stakeholder engagement, capital raising, strategic partnerships, marketing and client engagement.
The appointment effectively places several important growth functions under the leadership of a single senior executive.
As Chief Commercial Officer, Lau will work to deepen Paragon’s relationships with existing clients while identifying opportunities to build new relationships with investors, intermediaries and strategic partners.
Capital raising will represent another major component of his responsibilities as the company seeks to broaden the investor base supporting its strategies.
For an investment manager, commercial leadership can extend well beyond conventional sales. It can involve determining which markets and investor segments offer the strongest opportunities, communicating investment strategies to prospective clients, developing distribution relationships and ensuring that the firm’s investment capabilities are aligned with evolving client demand.
Lau’s role will also encompass stakeholder engagement, giving him responsibility for strengthening relationships across Paragon’s broader network.
Strategic partnerships could become an increasingly important component of that effort as Paragon looks for opportunities to extend its reach and complement its internal investment capabilities.
His oversight of marketing and client engagement is expected to help create a more coordinated commercial organization around the firm’s investment platform.
The appointment represents an important milestone for Paragon because it is the first time the company has established a Chief Commercial Officer position.
Creating the role signals that Paragon is placing additional organizational emphasis on commercial growth as it develops its multi-asset investment management business.
Rather than distributing responsibility for fundraising, partnerships, client development and marketing across several functions, the company will now have a senior executive responsible for connecting those activities into a broader commercial strategy.
Paragon described the appointment as part of its efforts to strengthen its position as a multi-asset investment manager.
A multi-asset approach can involve managing capital across different investment categories rather than concentrating exclusively on a single strategy or asset class.
That structure can create opportunities to serve investors with different objectives while allowing an investment manager to build deeper relationships across a broader range of client needs.
As Paragon grows, expanding its commercial organization could help the firm introduce those capabilities to a larger audience of investors and institutional partners.
Lau’s experience at Credit Suisse, UBS and Citigroup Private Bank is particularly relevant to that objective because those organizations operate extensive global networks serving wealthy families, entrepreneurs, institutional investors and other sophisticated market participants.
His background therefore brings not only financial-industry experience but also familiarity with the types of relationship-driven businesses that are central to fundraising and investment management.
His more recent experience as CEO of Azura Investment Partners adds another dimension by giving him direct leadership experience within an investment firm rather than exclusively within large banking institutions.
That combination could be useful as Paragon balances the requirements of operating an investment platform with the need to grow distribution and maintain close relationships with clients.
The appointment also comes as Paragon seeks to broaden its presence across Asia.
The region includes a large and increasingly sophisticated base of private wealth, family offices, institutional investors and other pools of capital, creating opportunities for investment managers capable of establishing strong local relationships.
For Paragon, Lau will be responsible for helping translate its investment capabilities into a broader commercial footprint across those markets.
His responsibilities in business development will include identifying new opportunities for the firm, while his work in stakeholder engagement and client relationships will focus on strengthening Paragon’s connections with existing and prospective investors.
The capital-raising component of his position will be closely connected with those efforts.
Investment managers depend on their ability to communicate their strategies, establish trust with investors and maintain relationships over multiple investment cycles.
Lau’s long career in private banking and wealth management gives him experience in environments where long-term client relationships are particularly important.
Strategic partnerships will provide another potential avenue for expansion.
Such relationships can help investment managers reach new groups of investors, broaden their distribution networks and collaborate with organizations that bring complementary capabilities or geographic reach.
By placing partnership development alongside fundraising, marketing and client engagement within Lau’s mandate, Paragon is creating a commercial position with responsibility across several interconnected parts of the growth process.
The newly created role also reflects Paragon’s evolution as an organization.
As investment managers expand, building out leadership beyond the investment function can become increasingly important. A dedicated commercial executive can allow portfolio and investment professionals to remain focused on managing capital while another senior leader concentrates on client growth, distribution and strategic relationships.
For Paragon, Lau will serve as that connection between the firm’s investment capabilities and the investors and partners it wants to reach.
His appointment gives the company an executive with experience spanning global financial institutions and investment management organizations at a time when Paragon is seeking to expand both its client base and its presence across Asia.
The company expects the addition of a Chief Commercial Officer to strengthen its ability to coordinate fundraising, business development, partnerships and client engagement as it enters the next stage of its growth.
With Lau overseeing those functions, Paragon is building a more formal commercial infrastructure around its multi-asset investment platform and positioning itself to develop deeper relationships with clients and institutional partners throughout the region.
