Perplexity has introduced Perplexity Computer, a new AI system designed to unify frontier models into a single, general-purpose digital worker capable of creating and executing entire workflows.
As AI models become more capable and specialized, the products built around them have increasingly become a bottleneck. Perplexity Computer is designed to remove that limitation by orchestrating multiple leading AI models into a single coordinated system, enabling users to harness their combined strengths.
Perplexity Computer operates the same interfaces as a human user and is positioned as the next evolution of AI systems. While chat interfaces provide answers and traditional agents complete discrete tasks, Perplexity Computer creates and executes full workflows that can run for hours or even months. Users begin by describing an outcome, and the system breaks the request into tasks and subtasks, creating sub-agents to handle execution.
These sub-agents can perform web research, generate documents, process data, and make API calls to connected services. Work is coordinated automatically and runs asynchronously, allowing users to focus on other responsibilities or operate multiple instances in parallel. Each task runs in an isolated compute environment with access to a real filesystem, browser, and integrated tools.
If the system encounters a problem, it can generate additional sub-agents to resolve it, whether that involves researching supplemental information, coding applications, locating API keys, or escalating to the user when necessary. Perplexity describes this architecture as a safe and universally accessible harness for powerful AI that requires no localized setup.
The launch builds on Perplexity’s broader mission to power curiosity through highly accurate AI. The company previously introduced Comet, described as the first AI-native browser, along with the Comet Assistant personal AI agent. It has also focused on advancing deep research capabilities, persistent memory, and task management.
Perplexity Computer is model-agnostic and built around intelligent multi-model orchestration. As frontier models become more specialized, the company argues that the most powerful AI systems will be those that can intelligently deploy multiple models across different subtasks.
At launch, Perplexity Computer runs Opus 4.6 as its core reasoning engine and orchestrates sub-agents using a range of models tailored to specific functions, including Gemini for deep research and sub-agent creation, Nano Banana for images, Veo 3.1 for video, Grok for lightweight tasks, and ChatGPT 5.2 for long-context recall and broad search. The harness is designed to evolve as models advance, and users can select specific models for specific subtasks based on their needs and token budgets.
Perplexity also drew a historical parallel to the origins of the word “computer,” referencing 18th-century mathematician Alexis Clairaut, who employed human “computers” to refine predictions about Halley’s Comet. The company said that while the term has evolved, it has always referred to the autonomous division of complex work with accuracy at its core.
Perplexity Computer is now available to Perplexity Max subscribers, with availability for Enterprise Max users expected soon.
KEY QUOTES:
“Frontier AI models are getting smarter. The best are becoming so capable that the products built around them are a bottleneck for showing their true potential. And as every new model specializes more, only Perplexity can unify all of the top capabilities into a single system for the most powerful use of AI yet.”
“Perplexity Computer unifies every current AI capability into a single system. Computer is a general-purpose digital worker that operates the same interfaces you do. It is the next evolution of AI. Chat interfaces have answers, while agents can do tasks. Perplexity Computer is a system that creates and executes entire workflows, capable of running for hours or even months.”
“Perplexity Computer operates the software stack just like a human co-worker would: by using it. Computer reasons, delegates, searches, builds, remembers, codes, and delivers.”
“Start by describing an outcome. Perplexity Computer breaks it into tasks and subtasks, creating sub-agents for execution.”
“The coordination is automatic, and the work is asynchronous. You can focus on other things, or run dozens of Perplexity Computers in parallel.”
“Perplexity’s model agnostic harness allows these to change as models advance. Computer also allows you to choose specific models for specific subtasks.”
“The best AI models in the world are already capable of extraordinary work. What they’ve lacked is a system that can orchestrate capability across tasks, tools, and time. Until today.”
