PetIQ has acquired MYOS Corp and its portfolio of Fortetropin-based animal muscle health products, adding consumer supplements and veterinarian-exclusive formulations to its pet health and wellness platform.
The acquisition gives PetIQ ownership of the MYOS brand and patented Fortetropin ingredient technology. The products are designed to support muscle preservation, mobility and recovery in companion animals affected by aging, injury or surgery.
Fortetropin is a proprietary bioactive compound intended to influence myostatin, a naturally occurring regulator that limits muscle growth. MYOS says the ingredient has been studied in humans and animals, including dogs, cats and horses, and is supported by more than a dozen clinical studies and a portfolio of patents.
PetIQ plans to maintain the MYOS and Fortetropin names while incorporating the products into its broader health and wellness portfolio. The company can use its national retail, e-commerce, manufacturing and distribution capabilities to expand availability and introduce the products to more pet owners and veterinary customers.
The deal expands PetIQ beyond its established categories, which include over-the-counter flea and tick medications, dental treats, nutritional products and other wellness offerings. Its brands include PetArmor, Capstar, Nextstar, Minties, VetIQ and Rocco & Roxie.
PetIQ is owned by Bansk Group, a consumer-focused investment firm managing more than $5 billion. Lincoln International and Davis Polk advised PetIQ and Bansk, while Class VI Partners and Davis Graham advised MYOS.
