Pittsburgh Penguins Name Ted Towne As Chief Financial Officer

The Pittsburgh Penguins have named Ted Towne as Chief Financial Officer, adding a veteran sports finance executive to the organization’s leadership team.

Towne joins the Penguins from Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals, where he spent nearly two decades and most recently served as Chief Financial Officer. In that role, he oversaw financial planning, analysis, and operational strategy while advising ownership and the organization’s board of directors.

In 2025, Towne also took on interim Chief Revenue Officer and Chief Marketing Officer responsibilities, expanding his oversight to 12 operating departments, including business strategy and analytics.

During his tenure with the Nationals, Towne played a key role in negotiating a 20-year lease extension for Nationals Park. He was also involved in major commercial agreements, including a long-term concessions deal with Levy Restaurants and a new retail partnership with Fanatics.

Towne also led the Nationals’ transition to a new enterprise resource planning platform and a modernized procure-to-pay process.

From 2014 through 2022, he served as Assistant General Manager and Vice President of Finance, a role created to bring additional financial discipline to baseball operations. In that position, he supported player acquisition and contract negotiations and contributed to the Nationals’ 2019 World Series championship.

Towne also helped the organization secure the 2015 NHL Winter Classic at Nationals Park, supported the 2018 MLB All-Star Week, and oversaw the on-time and on-budget development of the team’s spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Earlier in his career, Towne worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Forrester Construction Company, and Lerner Enterprises. He has also served on the Alumni Advisory Board of the University of Maryland’s Sports Management Program and taught as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University.

His appointment follows the recent hiring of Marcel Braithwaite as President of Business Operations.
