Planview: Interview With CPO Louise Allen About The Strategic Portfolio Management And Digital Product Development Company

By Amit Chowdhry • Jun 24, 2026

Planview is a leading end-to-end platform for Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM) and Digital Product Development (DPD), enabling organizations to align portfolios with strategic goals, manage resources, and orchestrate product development. Pulse 2.0 interviewed Planview CPO Louise Allen to learn more.

Louise Allen’s Background

Could you tell me more about your background? Allen said:

“I’ve had an unconventional path into product leadership. My introduction to corporate life came in my early 30s, after decades of playing tennis professionally. I actually competed in all four Grand Slams—reaching the third round at Wimbledon in 1983—and, at one point, ranked 60th in the world in women’s singles. When I retired from the circuit, I had no idea what would come next; I landed in product management by chance (and thanks to a friend who was willing to put in a good word on my behalf).”

“It turns out it was the right place for me. I’ve spent more than 20 years building and leading product organizations with a deep focus on strategic product direction, innovation, and driving meaningful outcomes for customers. Before joining Planview in 2008, I held leadership roles at QuickArrow, Tivoli Systems, and NetQoS. At QuickArrow in particular, I led product strategy during a period of significant growth, helping to take the company from a self-funded startup to a consistently profitable industry leader.”

“My career has always centered on bringing clarity, structure, and vision to fast-moving technology environments, and on empowering teams to translate strategy into tangible results.”

Primary Role

What are your primary responsibilities? Allen shared:

“As Planview’s chief product officer, I lead overall product strategy, positioning, and roadmaps development for our Portfolio Management and Work Management solutions. My role is to ensure that our overall vision aligns with what our customers are asking for and meets the needs of the market. Essentially, I make sure we’re building the right products, in the right way, so we can drive meaningful outcomes for our customers.”

“A big part of my work involves connecting the long-term strategic vision with the day-to-day decisions required to bring that vision to life, regularly meeting with customers to learn what’s most important to them. I also partner closely with cross-functional teams, as well as making sure our portfolio delivers the visibility and structure that organizations need to manage complex work at scale.”

Favorite Memory

What has been your favorite memory working for the company so far? Allen reflected:

“It has to be when our work truly makes a difference for customers. Seeing organizations transform the way they operate is incredibly rewarding. I especially value the conversations where customers share the challenges they’re navigating, as these discussions help shape our product direction and create opportunities for us to guide them toward new ways of working, whether that’s adopting more strategic portfolio management practices, embracing a product-oriented approach, or leveraging new capabilities like AI to accelerate outcomes.”

“Some of my most meaningful moments internally at Planview have involved supporting and uplifting our teams, particularly through our Women@Planview initiative. Helping to foster an environment where women feel seen, supported, and empowered is something I’m deeply proud of.”

Core Products

What are the company’s core products and features? Allen explained:

“Planview works with leading global enterprises to help them connect their strategy to execution through one agile, unified platform. Our AI-powered solutions make it easier for organizations to align work with business outcomes, track performance across teams, and accelerate delivery. We design solutions to deliver results faster, while staying adaptable and focused on continuous improvement.”

“For example, our new, comprehensive AI offering, Anvi, delivers expert-level guidance and intelligent actions powered by deep domain expertise and contextual data intelligence across the work ecosystem. Launched in October of this year, the solution directly addresses critical enterprise challenges around alignment, capacity, integration, and risk. Our products empower today’s leaders to prioritize strategic initiatives and deliver successful outcomes.”

Challenges Faced

Have you faced any challenges in your sector of work recently? Allen acknowledged:

“The biggest challenge is defining what ‘success’ means for AI initiatives, both internally and for our customers. Many enterprise AI projects don’t deliver immediate results, which can be seen as failure if not put into the right context, and we’ve had to navigate that for ourselves while helping our users do the same.”

“We’ve found that the best way forward is to treat AI as a vehicle for experimentation. The first try is unlikely to tick every box, but each iteration provides valuable data that moves the project toward the desired outcome. A reframing of the AI development process allows CIOs and CFOs to collaborate more effectively and ensure that their technological and financial strategies align. Essentially, we overcame it by changing the narrative: “Failures” are essential steps toward real innovation and measurable value.”

Evolution Of The Company’s Technology

How has the company’s technology evolved since launching? Allen noted:

“Planview was founded in 1989. That was a very different world. Over the past 36 years, our technology has evolved in response to the market and our customers’ needs: from project management roots to an enterprise-wide platform for product and value delivery.”

“We’ve embedded analytics, automation, and AI to help leaders move from measuring activity to measuring outcomes to make technology an enabler of strategy, not a barrier to it. Our 2023 release of Planview Copilot, an AI-powered assistant built into our work and portfolio management platform, represented a leap forward for AI-assisted connected work, providing teams with insights and guidance in natural language.”

“Anvi is an evolution of that work, bringing context-driven intelligence to every layer of work. By combining deep domain expertise with contextual data, Anvi can identify risks, optimize team capacities, and align strategy with execution in real-time. It demonstrates how AI isn’t a cure-all, but it is a critical partner to organizations as they seek to anticipate challenges, adapt quickly, and make choices that drive toward their actual goals.”

Significant Milestones

What have been some of the company’s most significant milestones? Allen cited:

“At Planview, we’ve been focused on steady growth: bringing in new customers, expanding our capabilities, and continuing to invest in new product innovation and smart acquisitions. In the first half of 2025 alone, we welcomed 120 new customers. We’ve also grown our R&D investment by more than 30% since 2022. Recent acquisitions (like Plutora in 2022 and Sciforma in 2025) have helped us broaden our global reach and better support customers at every stage of their portfolio management journey.”

“Of course, product innovation remains central to the company’s overall goals and my own personal milestone moments. The past few years have seen Planview release new, AI-driven tools that deliver contextual intelligence to help organizations anticipate challenges, optimize resources, and align decisions with strategic objectives. To me, that’s a significant achievement, especially in a market where so many AI initiatives have failed to produce returns.”

Customer Success Stories

Can you share any specific customer success stories? Allen highlighted:

“Back in 2020, investment management leader Vanguard partnered with Planview to execute a five-year modernization journey. The goals were simple: move faster and deliver better outcomes for investors. That meant adopting agile practices across teams, shifting from project to product-oriented approaches, and rebuilding microservice-based systems. Five years on, the results speak for themselves: a five-fold increase in technology change rate, a 75% decrease in major incident frequency, and continued customer satisfaction improvements.”

FedEx is another great example. The company challenged us to find ways to deliver customer value efficiently across a complex web of over 1,000 agile teams. By integrating Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) with Value Stream Management (VSM), FedEx aligned strategic goals with execution and accelerated delivery speed. Using Planview’s VSM platform, teams identified bottlenecks and optimized flow metrics, improving their throughput by 29% in ten months. The organization also saw testing bottlenecks decrease and flow time improve by 20%. Uniting OKRs and VSM has empowered FedEx to continuously refine processes, improve quality, and maintain strategic alignment.”

Differentiation From The Competition

What differentiates the company from its competition? Allen affirmed:

“What sets Planview apart is how seamlessly we connect strategy, execution, and intelligence in one place. Rather than focusing on isolated functions, Planview provides a single source of truth for strategic alignment, capacity intelligence, and workflow integration across portfolios.”

“Anvi takes this a step further by providing the ‘why’ behind the work. It doesn’t just automate tasks; it offers guidance, highlights risks, and uncovers connections that have gone long unnoticed. Combined with enterprise-grade security, regional data isolation, and intuitive workflow integrations, we’ve built a platform that the modern enterprise needs.”

Future Company Goals

What are some of the company’s future goals? Allen concluded:

“Our goal is to redefine how enterprises use AI and technology. We want to make sure that no investment or implementation is undertaken for its own sake—and I’m excited to say we’re making strong progress. Planview Anvi is helping organizations move toward a state of true contextual awareness, continuous connection, and reliable alignment of strategy, resources, and delivery.”

“We’re also working to expand Anvi’s intelligent capabilities across the full work ecosystem, so teams can anticipate change instead of just reacting to it. At the same time, we remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of data security, transparency, and trust. Our goal is to make advanced AI guidance accessible, practical, and transformative for every enterprise.”
