- Online kids clothing company Primary recently announced that it raised $20 million in Series C funding
Primary — an online kids clothing company founded by Christina Carbonell and Galyn Bernard — announced recently that it raised $20 million in Series C funding, according to Built In. With this round of funding, Primary is planning to expand its footwear and adult clothing lines. And it also plans to test out physical retail locations.
This round of funding was led by USVP and Homebrew Ventures. Including this round of funding, Primary has raised a total of $47.8 million. And last year, Primary hit $30 million in revenue.
And Primary announced it is hiring former Buzzfeed and Etsy executive Cap Watkins to its board of directors. Harvard Business School professor and former Uber SVP Frances Frei is also joining the board.
Bernard and Carbonell founded the company in 2015. The two of them used to work at Diapers.com (acquired by Amazon).
Bernard had spent many years building and marketing brands for busy parents like Baby Einstein and Diapers.com. Carbonell was one of the first employees at Diapers.com and launched and marketed nine successful e-commerce sites. Primary chief creative officer Angela Goleme used to be an associate creative director at Amazon’s Quidsi. And Primary CTO John Goulah used to be a senior engineering manager at Etsy and the head of technology at Next New Networks (acquired by Google). And Primary.com chief supply chain and merchandise officer Marienne Hill-Treadway is a former executive at Ann, Armani Exchange, and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Primary sells inclusive “label-free” cotton clothing without logos or slogans. And they were inspired to launch the company after shopping for clothing for their children only to keep finding gender prescriptive options.
Fenwick & West had represented Primary in the funding round. Fenwick partner Cynthia (Cindy) Clarfield Hess and associates Katherine Duncan, Ivan Au, and Veronica Zavala worked on the deal.
