Privateer is a company focused on improving life on Earth from space by enabling greater access to space safety, fully automated maneuvers, and the first-ever space ride-sharing platform for space imagery and data. The company was founded by CEO and Chairman Alex Fielding, Chief Scientist Dr. Moriba Jah, and renowned Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. In a recent interview with Reuters, Fielding said that the company raised $56.5 million and acquired Orbital Insight.
For over a decade, Orbital Insight has been focused on making critical information about happenings on land, air, and sea accessible and readily usable for mass-market applications. And Orbital Insight’s advanced AI modeling has been utilized across various industries to provide unprecedented insight into everything from illegal fishing to supply chain management.
The Series A funding round was led by Aero X Ventures, a space-focused VC firm, and participated in by Lux Capital, BOKA Group, Starburst Ventures, and the Winklevoss twins.
“As we begin this new chapter together, Orbital Insight’s TerraScope analytics platform will integrate with Privateer’s Wayfinder data engine, bringing together data and intelligence across all domains, from sea to space,” said Privateer.
Before launching Privateer in 2021, Fielding was Ripcord’s founder and director and worked as an Agency Direct Contractor at NASA. From 2001 to 2005, Fielding worked on Wheels of Zeus (wOz) to develop GPS locator technology for assets, pets, and people. WoZ was also founded with Wozniak and sold to Zontrak. Dr. Jah previously worked as a Spacecraft Navigation Engineer at NASA and an Investigator at the Air Force Research Laboratory.
