Qualcomm has completed its acquisition of Modular, an AI-native software infrastructure company whose platform helps developers optimize and deploy generative and agentic AI workloads across different types of computing hardware. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
The transaction combines Modular’s software platform with Qualcomm Technologies’ high-performance, energy-efficient computing products. Qualcomm expects the combination to strengthen its ability to provide more complete AI solutions spanning devices, edge infrastructure and data centers.
Modular gives developers a unified software environment for building and deploying AI applications across heterogeneous computing systems.
Heterogeneous computing involves using several types of processors within the same system, such as central processing units, graphics processing units, neural processing units and custom accelerators. Each processor may be better suited to a different part of an AI workload.
Developers often face difficulty moving applications between these hardware architectures because each processor can require different software tools, programming approaches and optimization work.
Modular is designed to reduce that fragmentation by allowing developers to work through a more consistent software layer while maintaining performance across different computing platforms.
Qualcomm believes the acquisition will help address one of the AI industry’s central challenges: enabling models and applications to run efficiently across a wide range of hardware without forcing developers to rewrite or extensively modify their software for each environment.
The combined platform will support generative AI, which creates content such as text, images and code, and agentic AI systems capable of completing multistep tasks and taking actions across applications.
Qualcomm plans to expand the technology across data center systems, edge infrastructure, personal computing devices and industrial AI applications.
Edge infrastructure processes data closer to where it is generated rather than sending every workload to a centralized cloud data center. This approach can reduce latency, improve privacy and lower the amount of information that must be transmitted over networks.
Qualcomm has historically developed energy-efficient processors and connectivity technologies for smartphones and other devices. The company has increasingly expanded into personal computers, vehicles, industrial systems and data center computing.
Modular adds a software layer that could help Qualcomm connect those hardware platforms through a more unified AI development environment.
The acquisition is also intended to give Modular additional scale, financial resources and access to Qualcomm’s developer, enterprise and hardware ecosystems.
Qualcomm said Modular’s commitment to an open and heterogeneous computing ecosystem will continue following the transaction.
Modular’s Mojo programming language, MAX AI platform and Modular Cloud will continue operating as distinct products and brands. Qualcomm Technologies plans to provide additional investment and support for their development.
Mojo is designed for AI and systems programming, combining higher-level development capabilities with tools for optimizing performance on advanced hardware.
MAX provides infrastructure for developing, optimizing and deploying AI models across different computing environments.
Modular Cloud extends the company’s software capabilities through cloud-based infrastructure, allowing developers and enterprises to access AI deployment tools without managing every underlying system directly.
Maintaining the Modular brands could help preserve continuity for existing customers and developers while allowing the business to benefit from Qualcomm’s commercial reach and engineering resources.
Modular co-founder and CEO Chris Lattner will join Qualcomm as Executive Vice President of Advanced AI Software and Platforms.
Lattner will lead efforts to integrate Modular’s technology with Qualcomm’s broader AI strategy while continuing the development of its open software ecosystem.
The acquisition positions Qualcomm to compete through a combination of processors, connectivity technologies and AI software rather than relying exclusively on semiconductor products.
A complete AI platform must support model development, software optimization, hardware acceleration, deployment and ongoing operation. By adding Modular, Qualcomm intends to offer more of those capabilities within a connected technology stack.
The company also believes a hardware-independent software platform could increase competition by giving customers greater flexibility when selecting processors and deployment environments.
Qualcomm said the combination will support performance across CPUs, GPUs, NPUs and custom silicon while improving software portability and developer productivity.
