Qualcomm Technologies has been selected as BMW Group’s lead compute silicon provider for its next-generation digital cockpit, advanced driver assistance and automated driving systems. The agreement covers BMW vehicle programs beginning next decade and is expected to extend the companies’ technology collaboration throughout that period.
BMW will use technologies from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis portfolio, including Snapdragon Cockpit and Snapdragon Ride platforms, the Snapdragon Elite automotive platform, high-performance systems-on-chips and dedicated artificial intelligence accelerators.
A system-on-chip combines multiple computing functions within a single semiconductor. In a modern vehicle, these processors can support infotainment, navigation, communications, driver monitoring, sensor processing and automated driving functions.
Dedicated AI accelerators are designed to process machine learning workloads more efficiently than general-purpose processors. In vehicles, these workloads may include identifying objects, interpreting sensor information, understanding driver behavior and supporting real-time driving decisions.
The agreement establishes a shared hardware foundation for BMW’s next generation of AI-powered vehicle experiences.
BMW’s digital cockpit includes the displays, controls, entertainment systems and connected services used by drivers and passengers. Greater computing capacity can support more responsive interfaces, personalized features and AI-based assistants.
Advanced driver assistance systems can help with functions such as lane positioning, braking, speed control and parking. Automated driving systems extend those capabilities by allowing the vehicle to perform more driving tasks under defined conditions.
Qualcomm said BMW selected the company because of its computing performance, AI capabilities and long-term automotive technology roadmap.
The expanded relationship follows several years of technical collaboration between the companies.
Their work was most recently demonstrated through the November 2025 commercial launch of Snapdragon Ride Pilot in the BMW iX3, the first vehicle introduced under BMW’s Neue Klasse program.
Snapdragon Ride Pilot was jointly developed by Qualcomm and BMW to support the automaker’s Symbiotic Drive experience.
The system is designed to integrate the driver with automated driving functions rather than treating human control and vehicle automation as entirely separate operating modes.
BMW’s approach seeks to preserve the driving characteristics associated with the brand while introducing greater automation and intelligent assistance.
The Snapdragon Digital Chassis is Qualcomm’s integrated automotive computing platform. It is based on more than two decades of investment in automotive-grade semiconductors and software.
The portfolio includes technologies for digital cockpits, connectivity, assisted and automated driving, cloud-connected services and other vehicle functions.
Each component is designed for a particular automotive domain while operating through a common architecture.
This structure allows vehicle systems that have historically operated separately to share information and function as a more unified intelligent platform.
For automakers, a common architecture can simplify vehicle development, reduce integration work and support software updates across multiple models.
It may also allow BMW to introduce new capabilities throughout a vehicle’s operating life without replacing the underlying computing system.
The agreement reflects the automotive industry’s broader shift toward software-defined vehicles.
In a software-defined vehicle, features and performance are increasingly controlled by software running on centralized computing platforms rather than by numerous isolated electronic control units.
This transition requires automakers to secure long-term supplies of processors capable of supporting increasingly advanced software and AI workloads.
Qualcomm is positioning its automotive technology as an important growth area beyond its traditional smartphone and wireless communications businesses.
The BMW agreement gives Qualcomm a larger role in the automaker’s future vehicle architecture while providing BMW with a consistent silicon platform for cockpit and automated driving development.
Qualcomm expects agentic and physical AI to play an increasingly important role in vehicles.
Agentic AI systems can complete multistep tasks and act on a user’s behalf, while physical AI applies artificial intelligence to machines interacting with the real world.
In a vehicle, these technologies could support more capable assistants, personalized driving experiences and systems that interpret changing road conditions using information from cameras, radar and other sensors.
