Quintessent has raised $40 million in an oversubscribed Series A round while beginning customer sampling of its single-chip quantum dot-based DWDM comb laser for AI data center optical interconnects.
Cycle Capital led the financing, joined by Goldman Sachs XIG-Industry Ventures, Hina Liberty Capital, Susquehanna International Group, InterVest, Safar Partners and Ciena.
Existing investors Foothill Ventures, M Ventures, Osage University Partners and Sierra Ventures also participated.
Quintessent is developing optical technology aimed at reducing the complexity, power consumption and cost associated with connecting rapidly expanding AI clusters.
Its first product generates eight precisely spaced wavelengths from a single laser using one bias control.
That design eliminates the need for banks of individually tuned lasers, high-power pump lasers and complex wavelength-control electronics.
Quintessent believes consolidating multiple wavelengths into one device can improve reliability, simplify manufacturing and reduce power consumption.
The architecture uses Gallium Arsenide O-band quantum dot gain material rather than the Indium Phosphide technology used by most existing optical interconnects.
Quintessent said the GaAs material system is mature and suited to high-volume manufacturing while avoiding dependence on the capacity-constrained InP supply chain.
By consolidating multiple lasers and removing supporting components, Quintessent says the design can enable up to a 40% reduction in data-movement power compared with narrow-and-fast architectures.
The technology can also potentially scale to different numbers of wavelengths and other CWDM wavelength bands.
Quintessent first demonstrated the comb laser to selected customers and partners at OFC 2026.
The company is now providing evaluation kits so customers can integrate the product into system test environments.
Proceeds from the financing will support product sampling, reliability testing, qualification and manufacturing scale-up.
Quintessent also plans to develop semiconductor optical amplifiers and begin work on an optical engine for high-reliability, availability and serviceability pluggable module interconnect applications.
The Santa Barbara company said the financing marks its transition from primarily developing technology toward becoming a product-focused optical infrastructure company.
