Rapidus Corporation announced that it has secured a total of ¥267.6 billion, approximately $1.7 billion, in funding from the Japanese government and 32 private-sector companies, positioning the semiconductor manufacturer to move from research and development into mass production of 2nm logic semiconductors by 2027.

Of the total funding, ¥100 billion was invested by the Information-Technology Promotion Agency of Japan, an independent administrative agency under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, under the Act on Facilitation of Information Processing. Prior to the investment, METI conducted a public solicitation process from September 3 to October 2, 2025, seeking entities capable of ensuring stable semiconductor production. Rapidus was selected as the operator on November 21, 2025, and subsequently secured the IPA investment following its application.

The remaining ¥167.6 billion came from 32 private-sector companies spanning technology, manufacturing, automotive, and financial services sectors. Investors include Canon, Development Bank of Japan Inc., Fujitsu, NTT, SoftBan,k and Sony Group, among others.

The latest capital increase, combined with ¥7.3 billion raised at the company’s founding, brings Rapidus’ total stated capital and legal capital surplus to ¥274.95 billion.

Since fiscal year 2022, Rapidus has also received subsidies from Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization under the Post-5G Information and Communication Systems Infrastructure Enhancement R&D Project. These initiatives include the development of 2nm-generation semiconductor integration technology and short turnaround time manufacturing technology based on Japan–U.S. collaboration, as well as chiplet, package design and manufacturing technologies for next-generation semiconductors.

Rapidus said it will continue pursuing additional capital increases and loans from both public and private sources as it advances toward commercial-scale production. The company’s strategy centers on building advanced logic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in Japan and accelerating innovation across design, wafer processing and 3D packaging.

Founded on August 10, 2022, Rapidus is headquartered in Tokyo. The company focuses on the development, design, manufacture and sale of semiconductor devices, integrated circuits and other electronic components, with a stated mission to develop and manufacture the world’s most advanced logic semiconductors and help create new industries through shortened cycle times across the semiconductor value chain.

KEY QUOTES:
