- The Raspberry Pi Foundation announced that the Raspberry Pi 4 now has an 8GB RAM option. These are the details.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation announced that the Raspberry Pi 4 now has an 8GB RAM option. This version of the Raspberry Pi 4 is priced at $75. Other options also include versions of the device with 2GB and 4GB. In February, Raspberry replaced the 1GB model of the Raspberry Pi 4 with the 2GB version. The 2GB RAM version is priced at $35 and the 4GB version is priced at $75.
Raspberry Pi’s operating system (Raspbian) is only 32-bit — which prevents single process from using over 4GB RAM. But now 8GB can be used across multiple processes.
“Raspbian” is being removed from the name of the operating system with “Raspberry Pi OS” serving as the replacement name.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation is working on a modified 64-bit version of Debian Linux — which would allow 64-bit apps that can use more than 4GB in a single process, according to Tom’s Hardware.
“Once we have the 64-bit kernel and userland there’s going to be a performance advantage. The RAM will turn directly into a performance advantage by improving filesystem performance,” said Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Upton via Tom’s Hardware. “Once you’ve been running your machine for a day every conceivable page that you might want off the drive is going to be in RAM.”
To buy a Raspberry Pi, you can visit raspberrypi.org. And in the U.S., you can also purchase the devices at Micro Center, Chicago Electronic Distributors, and Okdo.com.
