Redstone has reached the first close of its €25 million Blue Fund, establishing a new investment vehicle focused on early-stage ocean and water technology companies across Europe.
The fund is backed by angel investors, family offices, foundations, institutions and corporations connected to the maritime industry.
Based in the Nordic region with a broader European investment mandate, Redstone Blue will invest from pre-seed through Series A.
The strategy focuses on four areas: maritime and ports, energy, water technologies, and marine data and observation.
Redstone is positioning the fund around the modernization of legacy maritime industries and the emergence of technologies addressing water, energy, logistics and environmental challenges.
The firm highlighted the economic significance of the oceans, which cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and support areas ranging from global trade and food supply to energy and security.
Backers of the first close include the City of Turku, Meriaura Invest, Aboa Advest, LähiTapiola, Kelonia, Rausanne, Adamo Capital, Henrik Paasikivi, Magnus Kihlgren and ARGOng Investment, among others.
The Blue Fund extends Redstone’s thematic investment strategy into a category the firm believes could become one of the defining investment frontiers of the coming decades.
KEY QUOTE:
“At Redstone, we have been thematic investors for more than a decade and now believe that oceans and water are emerging as defining investment frontiers of the 21st century.”
