Refer A Friend is a personal marketplace app that rewards users for successfully referring trusted local service providers to their friends. Pulse 2.0 interviewed Refer A Friend founder and CEO Ryan Zeleznak to learn more.

Ryan Zeleznak’s Background

Ryan Zeleznak

Could you tell me more about your background? Zeleznak said:

“Business development has been central to my journey, long before creating the Refer A Friend App. With a solid foundation in real estate and entrepreneurship, I’ve navigated the ups and downs of various ventures from property development to leading a thriving new home division . These experiences have shaped my approach to innovation and problem-solving in business.”

Formation Of The Company

How did the idea for the company come together? Zeleznak shared:

“I have two thoughts on this. The first being: why should influencers be the only people who get paid to recommend businesses? It seems like anyone who has had a positive experience with a local business and refers them to friends and family should get a piece of the pie.”

“I’ve also found that through my experience working with vendors across various industries, I’ve learned the importance of trust. Small businesses, like electricians and plumbers, rely heavily on word-of-mouth referrals to thrive and there’s a real need for reliable professionals to get the job done right. I wanted to explore innovative ways to make it easier for customers to refer these small businesses, creating a reward system for both the business and the referrer.”

Favorite Memory

What has been your favorite memory working for the company so far? Zeleznak reflected:

“I get to work with my best friend and wife, Shernaz! She has been key in our business and user outreach. Like me, Shernaz has a real passion for helping small businesses. Her gift for networking was key when we were thinking about what functions to add to this app. Talking things out with her has been a huge bonus in starting Refer A Friend App.”

Core Products

What are the company’s core products and features? Zeleznak explained:

Refer-A-Friend

“Our app enables users to create their own personalized referral marketplace. Once users sign up, they can invite their trusted service providers — whether that’s a plumber, electrician, hairstylist, dog walker or any other local professional — to join their marketplace.”

Refer-A-Friend

“We’ve designed the app to be extremely user-friendly, making it accessible to people from all walks of life, whether they are stay-at-home parents, solo entrepreneurs or anyone looking for a side hustle. The simplicity of the app helps users and businesses get started quickly without needing any technical expertise.”

Refer-A-Friend

“We also provide both users and businesses with data and insights, helping businesses track their customer acquisition and retention, while users can track how much they’ve earned and which referrals are leading to successful jobs.”

Challenges Faced

Have you faced any challenges in your sector of work recently? Zeleznak acknowledged:

“Getting a startup off the ground means being involved in every task. For me, the IT part has been the hardest because that’s not my strongsuit. We want to make sure our users have positive and meaningful experiences on the app and that means getting everything right which can take time. The “hurry-up-and-wait” has taken me a while to get used to, but I’m realizing it’s the best way to make sure everything is working the way it should be.”

Evolution Of The Company’s Technology

How has the company’s technology evolved since launching? Zeleznak noted:

“Yes, I recognized early that allowing friends to easily share each other’s marketplace and list of pros would expand one another’s reach making it more of a social network and a one-stop shop for recommendations. If a member connects with 5-10 friends and they all have 5 Pros listed you now have over 25-50 vetted pros at your disposal and avoid going thru reviews and searching.”

Customer Success Stories

Can you share any specific customer success stories? Zeleznak highlighted:

“Very soon after we launched, there was a salon where the owner was surprised at just how quickly the extra clients added up. With just one regular client adding the stylist to her marketplace, she was able to quickly recommend the style to two of her friends.”

“So far, just launching with a platform that we feel confident with that makes sense for so many people. Everyone involved benefits with our app which we believe is very rare.”

Funding

Are you able to discuss funding? Zeleznak revealed:

“Currently, we are self-funded but may explore a capital raise down the road.”

Total Addressable Market

What total addressable market (TAM) size is the company pursuing? Zeleznak assessed:

“The Refer A Friend App is targeting two massive markets: Home Services, valued at over $400B, and Beauty Care, valued at over $450B. Both industries rely heavily on trust and customer recommendations, making them ideal for a referral-based platform. By offering a marketplace that connects businesses with customers through referrals, the app can tap into a combined market opportunity of more than $850B.”

Differentiation From The Competition

What differentiates the company from its competition? Zeleznak affirmed:

“Unlike traditional referral programs that are typically restricted to influencers or affiliates, Refer A Friend App gives everyone the ability to monetize their personal networks. Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom, an entrepreneur, or just someone who loves helping out, our platform makes it easy for anyone to earn by simply referring businesses they trust.”

“Our platform is tailored specifically for local small businesses, which are often underserved by traditional advertising channels. Refer A Friend App taps into the power of word-of-mouth, which is one of the most trusted forms of advertising for small businesses, and we streamline that process in a digital way. We’re focused on empowering local businesses like plumbers, electricians, hair stylists, dog walkers and more — industries that typically rely on personal referrals but may struggle to effectively tap into this marketing channel.”

“We don’t just leave businesses and users hanging once the referral is made. Our platform provides both real-time tracking and insights for businesses to see how they are acquiring new customers and for users to see how much they’ve earned. This transparency helps create a more effective and engaging experience for both parties.”

“Unlike many other referral programs that involve middlemen or complex contracts, Refer A Friend offers a simple, direct approach. Users connect businesses with their network, and both users and businesses earn fair compensation without dealing with third-party intermediaries or hidden fees.”

Future Company Goals

What are some of the company’s future goals? Zeleznak concluded:

“We want to be the go-to app not only for anyone looking for local business recommendations and referrals, but also the go-to for the businesses themselves. It’s truly a one-stop-shop for the entire business cycle. We want people in cities across the U.S. to have and use Refer A Friend App as a resource.”
