REPS: $23.6 Million Raised For Road Energy Production Technology

An Austrian clean energy startup called REPS has raised $23.6 million to scale a technology platform that converts the kinetic energy generated by trucks and other vehicles into electricity, according to Forbes. The company’s system is designed to be installed beneath roads at locations where vehicles naturally brake, capturing and converting energy that would otherwise be wasted into usable power.

Founded by Alfons Huber, the company says its Road Energy Production System uses hydraulic triggers embedded below the road surface. These triggers transfer vehicle-generated mechanical energy into a magnet-based generation system that produces electricity more efficiently than some competing approaches.

The startup has already deployed a commercial installation at the Port of Hamburg. According to the company, more than 115,000 trucks have driven over the installation since November, generating over 6,700 kWh of electricity.

REPS initially plans to focus on ports, logistics hubs, and industrial sites where heavy traffic patterns create consistent braking activity. The company believes those environments can provide reliable electricity generation without disrupting traffic flow or requiring additional land.

The company also outlined broader ambitions for urban deployment. Internal projections estimate that deploying 64,000 systems across a city such as Dubai could generate approximately 3.2 TWh of electricity annually, equivalent to roughly 11% of the city’s current electricity consumption.

REPS said the new funding will support commercialization efforts, patent expansion, and global scaling initiatives as interest grows from ports and logistics operators across Europe, North America, and Asia.
