Rhapsody is a digital health enablement platform company with expertise in healthcare integration, identity management, and clinical terminology. Pulse 2.0 interviewed Rhapsody CEO Sagnik Bhattacharya to learn more about the company.

Sagnik Bhattacharya’s Background

Sagnik Bhattacharya

Could you tell me more about your background? Bhattacharya said:

“I have a background in computer science and spent 16 years at Epic, where I led the outpatient EHR and value-based care teams for over a decade. During that time, I spent thousands of hours shadowing clinicians, gaining a deep understanding of their challenges and how technology can improve their workflows. What I discovered is that integrating all the disparate pieces of technology is key.”

“This passion for interoperability has guided my work in healthcare leadership and pro bono roles. Over a year ago, I became CEO of Rhapsody, where our mission is to make digital health interoperability a reality. Our dedicated team works closely with customers to bridge the gap between health tech innovation and real-world adoption.”

Formation Of Rhapsody

How did the idea for the company come together? Bhattacharya shared:

“The way we think about our job at Rhapsody is to help our customers accelerate digital health adoption. We have a suite of interoperability products including integration, semantic terminology management, and person identity management. In 2018, interoperability experts who are advancing FHIR and helped steer HL7 formed Rhapsody with the leading interface engine. We then created a platform that enables problem solving through interoperability.”

“Healthcare information systems are complicated and getting them to talk to one another is a significant hurdle for healthcare technology providers and healthcare administrators. Connecting the data is crucial and not nearly enough. That is why we added data quality capabilities through semantic terminology management and enterprise master person index (EMPI) solutions.”

Favorite Memory

What has been your favorite memory working for the company so far? Bhattacharya reflected:

“I have a couple favorite memories. First is having numerous conversations with customers who say Rhapsody is their favorite vendor. One person even noted if they were to get a tattoo of a product, it would be Corepoint. We sure hope he didn’t follow through. Also, I appreciate that we offer country-level solutions. We serve customers in 31 countries, and NHS Scotland went live with Rhapsody enterprise master person index (EMPI) for all their citizens this past year.”

Core Products

What are the company’s core products and features? Bhattacharya explained:

“We offer a digital health enablement platform made of composable API-enabled solutions with flexible deployment models. Our platform integrates data among various health data sources, including disparate EHRs, data warehouses, and more, to create a comprehensive view of a person’s health and health-related information. By ensuring and enhancing data quality, a digital health enablement platform provides a complete and accurate view of a person’s health profile, resulting in more informed decision-making, more accurate diagnoses, and better patient outcomes.”

— Rhapsody Integration is built for developers worldwide, designed for scalable, robust, and reliable acquisition and exchange of health data.

— Corepoint Integration is built for analysts and is a simpler, more comprehensive approach to interoperability with no code required.

— Rhapsody EMPI (Enterprise Master Person Index) accurately, consistently links records across disparate systems for a comprehensive view of identity data. Rhapsody Autopilot introduces AI-powered functionality that automates data stewardship.

— Rhapsody Semantic is code set mapping and terminology management to structure and normalize data across disparate systems for a single source of truth.

— Envoy iPaaS empowers healthcare technology teams with connected data from any source to any destination in any format.

Challenges Faced

What challenges have Bhattacharya and the team face in building the company? Bhattacharya acknowledged:

“There are numerous challenges in healthcare beginning with rising costs, shrinking budgets, increasing consumer demands, and a workforce shortage. At Rhapsody, we believe healthcare technology serves an important role in enabling healthcare technology builders and provider organizations to overcome these challenges. We’re disappointed to see many organizations spending excessively on integration without achieving their desired results.”

“We believe providers and health tech companies should outsource their integration needs to us, allowing their teams to focus on innovation or higher-value projects rather than EHR integrations. Our technology addresses the interoperability gap, accelerating digital health innovation at a lower cost. We also prioritize security and data privacy, complying with evolving global regulations and holding various certifications to validate our commitment to these responsibilities.”

Evolution of Rhapsody’s Technology

How has the company’s technology evolved since launching? Bhattacharya noted:

“Rhapsody technology has always been flexible, meeting customers where they are. We are committed to a FHIR and API- first approach while continuing to excel at HL7 protocols and standards as they evolve. We offer customers the option to deploy in their cloud, our cloud, or as an iPaaS. Most recently, we have introduced AI-powered automation into our EMPI solution to further reduce the burden of data stewardship. One area we have not changed, though, is our sole commitment to healthcare. We have always been in the healthcare industry, and we will continue to develop software for healthcare technology users.”

Significant Milestones

What have been some of the company’s most significant milestones? Bhattacharya cited:

“Recently, our team has launched Envoy iPaaS and announced Rhapsody Autopilot. Moving forward, we are excited to expand our AI initiatives, particularly with Rhapsody Autopilot, which uses machine learning to automatically link person records in line with customer preferences  – making us the only vendor to offer this combination. We look forward to making Rhapsody Autopilot generally available, expanding our feature offerings worldwide, and, most importantly, empowering more health tech builders and healthcare delivery organizations to accelerate digital health adoption.”

Customer Success Stories

When asking Bhattacharya about the company’s customer success stories, he highlighted:

“Customer success is at the heart of what we do, and sharing their stories is a lot of fun. Qventus, an AI company automating operating room operations, uses our integration solution and has improved performance by 10x and cut onboarding time in half. OU Health was migrating to Epic and reduced interface build time from 20 hours down to 8 with Corepoint. This also enabled their leaders to attract a wider talent pool. One more I’ll share is NHS Scotland deployed Rhapsody EMPI across the country, enabling a complete view of a person’s health journey for 6 million Scottish citizens.”

Revenue

When asking Bhattacharya about the company’s revenue details, he revealed:

“While we are private and don’t disclose revenue metrics, we are a profitable company that serves 1,700 customers across 31 countries.”

Total Addressable Market

What total addressable market (TAM) size is the company pursuing? Bhattacharya assessed:

“According to MarketsandMarkets, the global TAM for healthcare interoperability solutions will reach $6.2 Billion by 2027, with the US accounting for approximately one-fourth of that market.”

Differentiation From The Competition

What differentiates the company from its competition? Bhattacharya affirmed:

“First, Rhapsody offers a complete digital health enablement platform with composable integration, person data management, and semantic terminology solutions. Our solutions and deployment options are also flexible, meaning global customers use our products and they can choose to host in their cloud, ours, or as an iPaaS. Our products are also built to scale, and we have expertise connecting to any protocol or messaging standard like API, FHIR, and HL7, among others. Our integration solution has been Best in KLAS since 2009, and in recent years we have held the top and #2 spots in that category.”

Future Company Goals

What are some of the company’s future company goals? Bhattacharya pointed out:

“Our goal will always be to solve our customers’ challenges, understanding their needs and addressing those through healthcare technology. We are committed to addressing the inefficiencies currently present in healthcare systems.”

“At some point, we don’t want people to think about interoperability. Interoperability will just happen as companies like Rhapsody offer integration as a service. Within healthcare, the technology and the expertise exist to help providers, payers, public health, health information exchanges, and healthcare IT companies exchange data. Healthcare’s digital transformation happens when integration and interoperability no longer create tension or friction – when providers and digital health companies come together seamlessly.”

“Interoperability isn’t a goal unto itself. It’s about enabling others to do their work in advancing health and improving outcomes. We will continue to see a shift where interoperability is the foundation for limitless innovation. It’s an enabler for precision medicine, personalized care, and proactive health management.”

Additional Thoughts

Any other topics you would like to discuss? Bhattacharya concluded:

“At Rhapsody, we envision a future where healthcare becomes increasingly patient-centric. We’ve witnessed the journey from minimal EHR use to widespread adoption, and we recognize that the challenges of integration have evolved. Our ongoing mission is to enhance clinician experiences and improve patient outcomes through technology that seamlessly integrates into existing workflows, ensuring that our innovations genuinely empower users rather than complicate their processes.”
