Rivian Automotive has acquired Third Dimension AI, a developer of AI-powered 3D spatial generation technology, as the electric vehicle maker expands its autonomous driving and simulation capabilities.
Third Dimension AI has developed a platform that converts real-world data into high-fidelity, controllable 3D environments. The technology enables developers to recreate complex driving scenarios, modify conditions, and generate synthetic data at scale for training and validating autonomous driving systems.
By bringing the company’s technology and team in-house, Rivian plans to strengthen the physical and virtual data flywheel supporting its driver assistance and self-driving technology.
Third Dimension AI was founded in 2024 by Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokolski. Its platform is designed to help autonomous vehicle and robotics developers reconstruct real-world environments and create variations of unusual or difficult scenarios that may occur infrequently in normal driving.
This approach allows autonomy systems to be exposed to rare edge cases without waiting for those situations to happen repeatedly on public roads. Rivian said the technology should accelerate both model training and validation across its autonomous driving programs.
Third Dimension AI’s leadership team and technical employees will join Rivian’s Autonomy research and engineering organization.
The acquisition is expected to support Rivian’s autonomy work across both its consumer vehicle roadmap and future robotaxi initiatives. Simulation is an important component of autonomous vehicle development because it allows developers to repeatedly test systems against controlled scenarios, including complex traffic environments and unusual road conditions.
Rivian has continued investing in vertically integrated technologies spanning vehicle electrical architecture, software, artificial intelligence, propulsion, and autonomous driving.
The company manufactures electric vehicles in the United States and sells directly to both consumer and commercial customers.
For Rivian, Third Dimension AI adds a specialized simulation capability that can complement real-world vehicle data and help the company create more training and validation scenarios as its autonomous driving technology evolves.
KEY QUOTES:
“Simulation is central to how we train and validate our autonomous driving systems. Third Dimension’s team has built impressive technology that turns real-world data into detailed 3D environments. This allows us to recreate challenging driving situations, vary the conditions, and improve how our systems respond. Their technology and expertise will strengthen and accelerate autonomy across our consumer and robotaxi roadmaps.”
James Philbin, SVP, Autonomy & AI At Rivian
“Our mission at Third Dimension AI has always been to power the next generation of embodied AI and autonomous systems. Joining Rivian allows us to deploy our simulation technology at scale, accelerating both the generation of data needed to train autonomous systems and the validation needed to deploy them safely and reliably.”
Tolga Kart, Co-Founder And CEO Of Third Dimension AI
