Rob Gough Buys Fireballs In First Perpetual World Jai-Alai League Franchise Sale

The World Jai-Alai League (WJAL) announced it has sold the Fireballs professional jai-alai team to entrepreneur and investor Rob Gough, describing the transaction as the first time a professional jai-alai team has been sold in perpetuity rather than licensed on a seasonal basis.

WJAL positioned the deal as a shift in the business model of jai-alai from short-term, season-by-season team licenses toward long-term franchise ownership, aligning more closely with structures used in established professional sports. The league said the change is intended to support sustained investment, deepen brand equity tied to teams and venues, and strengthen community-based fan development.

Gough is known for investments across private companies, media, and high-end collectibles, including record-setting sports memorabilia purchases. WJAL said his ownership is expected to bring long-term capital, strategic support, and broader visibility as it continues efforts to modernize the sport and build new revenue streams.

The Fireballs are one of six Battle Court teams. The announcement comes ahead of the WJAL’s 2026 Spring Season, which is set to begin from the newly renovated JAM Arena in Miami, a former Miami Jai-Alai facility the league said has undergone a multi-million-dollar renovation and rebranding aimed at a more modern, experience-driven live sports environment.

WJAL said the 1,500-seat arena will include upgraded amenities such as VIP courtside seating and fan activations designed to make matches more immersive for families and new audiences, alongside the league’s broader push to expand distribution through social media and capitalize on international sports wagering interest.
