S-Transistors has raised €2.6 million in pre-seed funding to develop superconducting transistor-based integrated circuits that address a key scaling challenge facing cryogenic quantum computers.
Lifeline Ventures led the financing, with participation from an angel investor.
The Finnish startup originated from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and is developing a new class of superconducting transistors that combine transistor-like computational functionality with the extremely low power dissipation associated with superconductors.
S-Transistors plans to use the financing to develop prototypes for cryogenic signal control and handling, establish its own cryogenic laboratory, create a manufacturing pilot line for its integrated circuits and expand its team.
The company is targeting a fundamental bottleneck in superconducting quantum computing.
Current quantum systems often rely on extensive wiring between qubits operating inside ultra-cold cryostats and control electronics operating at room temperature. As qubit counts increase, that architecture becomes increasingly difficult to scale because of space, power and heat constraints.
S-Transistors wants to bring more classical control and interface electronics directly into the cryogenic environment near the quantum processor.
Its first planned commercial product is a superconducting-transistor-based multiplexer designed to work with existing cryogenic systems. The company expects to ship the product to early customers and strategic partners during its first year of operation.
That multiplexer is intended to serve as the first step toward S-Transistors’ larger vision of a “quantum motherboard” capable of coordinating large-scale quantum processors at millikelvin temperatures.
The underlying technology could eventually extend beyond quantum computing into energy-efficient classical computing, AI and high-performance computing hardware, spacecraft electronics and particle detectors.
