Satellogic has signed a $12 million agreement with a sovereign defense customer to deliver a commissioned, in-orbit NewSat satellite from its operational Aleph-1 constellation, enabling the customer to achieve independent Earth observation capability with significantly greater speed and cost efficiency than traditional satellite procurement. The agreement encompasses the full transfer of ownership and operations of the satellite to the customer, along with comprehensive support to develop the customer’s independent capabilities to command the satellite and process and use its data for both military and civilian applications. The transfer process will begin immediately and is expected to be completed in early 2027, subject to the parties meeting contractual and regulatory milestones.
By delivering an already commissioned and flight-proven asset from Satellogic’s operational constellation rather than manufacturing and launching a new satellite from scratch, the deal eliminates the technical risk and multi-year timelines associated with traditional sovereign satellite procurement programs. For the customer, the arrangement represents a significantly faster path to independent space-based intelligence capability — a growing priority for sovereign nations that want direct, autonomous access to Earth observation data for national strategic objectives without dependence on commercial data subscriptions. Upon completion of the transfer, the satellite will be removed from Satellogic’s operational fleet and incorporated into the customer’s sovereign regulatory framework.
Satellogic operates one of the largest commercially available high-resolution Earth observation constellations and describes its vertically integrated model — spanning satellite design, manufacturing, and operations — as uniquely positioning the company to offer this range of sovereign solutions at a speed and price point unmatched in the market. The company says it can offer Space Systems customers an expedient option of in-orbit delivery while maintaining ample capacity within its own constellation for existing and new Data and Analytics customers. The Aleph-1 constellation’s scale means individual satellite transfers do not compromise Satellogic’s ability to serve its broader commercial customer base.
Satellogic was founded in 2010 by Emiliano Kargieman and Gerardo Richarte and is listed on Nasdaq under the ticker SATL. The company’s mission is to democratize access to geospatial data through its information platform of high-resolution images, addressing pressing global challenges including climate change, energy supply, and food security. The $12 million agreement reflects what Satellogic describes as a flexible approach to meeting government customers at every stage of their journey toward sovereign Earth observation — from access to managed space systems to full satellite ownership and autonomous data availability.
KEY QUOTE:
“This agreement reflects the growing demand from sovereign nations for direct, independent access to space-based intelligence. Our customer recognized that an already operational satellite, backed by the proven reliability of our constellation, delivers capability that would otherwise take years and significantly more investment to build from scratch. We are proud to support their national objectives and look forward to a long-term partnership.”
