Senticell has successfully closed an oversubscribed seed financing round, raising nearly $7 million to further develop its innovative liquid biopsy platform that utilizes red blood cells. Notable investors participated in this round, including The Venture City, Capital Factory, Scalpel Ventures, and Evoce Capital, along with several high-net-worth individuals who recognized the potential of this groundbreaking technology.
The cornerstone of Senticell’s approach is its unique liquid biopsy method, which centers on extracting and analyzing nucleic acids bound to red blood cells. The technology is exclusively licensed from the University of Pennsylvania and draws on more than a decade of research led, in part, by Dr. Nilam Mangalmurti, the company’s scientific co-founder and Chief Scientific Advisor. This research has demonstrated a promising new pathway for cancer diagnostics.
Recognizing the distinctive properties of red blood cells, Senticell posits that these cells may serve as a valuable source of diagnostic information. Red blood cells are not only the most abundant cells in the human body, but they also have a lifespan of about 120 days and constantly circulate, allowing them to interact with various tissues throughout the organism. This biological reservoir is believed to hold critical insights that conventional plasma-based liquid biopsies might overlook, particularly in early-stage cancers or tumors that shed minimal detectable material into the bloodstream.
To validate its technology, Senticell is conducting two prospective clinical studies in collaboration with Penn Medicine, aiming to enroll about 300 patients. One of the studies focuses on 200 patients diagnosed with lung and pancreatic cancers. It aims to evaluate the detection of genetic drivers before surgical interventions and monitor the possibility of recurrence after surgery. The study is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2027.
The second study will involve around 100 patients suffering from head and neck and cervical cancers. This research will assess minimal residual disease and conduct post-treatment monitoring, with results expected to be released in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The newly acquired funding will support these oncology studies and further advance Senticell’s platform development, enabling the company to make significant strides in early cancer detection and personalized medicine.
