Sequestra, a climate tech startup focused on decarbonizing heavy industry, announced that it has raised €3 million in seed funding to accelerate the development and deployment of its carbon mineralization technology. The update was shared by co-founder Roberto Lerche in a LinkedIn post, where he confirmed the company is moving from laboratory research and development into pre-industrial pilot projects and early commercial deployments.

The funding will support Sequestra’s transition from R&D to real-world applications, enabling the company to scale its technology and begin executing its first commercial mineralization projects. The company is working to address industrial emissions by converting underutilized mineral materials into long-term carbon storage solutions.

The round was backed by VSE Beteiligungs-GmbH, which is supported by the Dr. Rudolf FRIES Familien-Privatstiftung. The investment reflects growing interest in scalable carbon removal solutions, particularly those targeting hard-to-abate industrial sectors.

Sequestra highlighted that over the past two years it has assembled a multidisciplinary team with expertise spanning process engineering, chemistry, automation, and artificial intelligence. The company believes this integrated approach is key to advancing its mission of unlocking large-scale carbon storage potential from widely available industrial materials.

In addition to its lead investor, Sequestra acknowledged support from FFG Austrian Research Promotion Agency and Austria Wirtschaftsservice, as well as earlier backers including Carbon Drawdown Initiative and Climate Founders. These partnerships have helped the company advance its technology and tackle the complexities of industrial decarbonization and carbon dioxide removal.

The company’s broader goal is to enable permanent CO2 storage through mineralization processes, positioning itself within the growing carbon removal and climate infrastructure ecosystem.

KEY QUOTES

“Over the last two years, we were able to put together a world-class team that brings an extraordinary motivation and commitment to everyday’s work. We combine extensive expertise in process engineering, chemistry, automation and AI – and thanks to all their combined efforts, we are getting closer to our overall mission at a constantly growing pace: Unleashing the CO2 storage potential of large-scale available, but underutilized mineral materials.”
