Sequoia Capital has raised about $7 billion for a new fund, marking the first major fundraising effort under its new leadership, according to a Bloomberg report. The funding underscores the firm’s continued push into large-scale, late-stage investments, particularly in artificial intelligence, as venture firms race to back the next generation of dominant tech companies.

The new fund will support Sequoia’s “expansion strategy,” which focuses on later-stage investments across the United States and Europe. The size of the fund, roughly double its previous $3.4 billion expansion vehicle raised in 2022, reflects the growing capital demands of mature startups, especially those operating in AI, where infrastructure and compute costs have surged.

A significant portion of the capital is expected to be directed toward major AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which require substantial funding to scale their models and infrastructure. These types of companies have driven record-breaking fundraising rounds across the venture ecosystem, prompting firms like Sequoia to raise larger funds to remain competitive.

The fundraising represents a pivotal moment for Sequoia as it transitions into a new leadership era. Alfred Lin and Pat Grady have taken on co-leadership roles, signaling a shift in how the firm approaches both early-stage and late-stage investing. Their leadership comes amid broader organizational changes, including new hires, role adjustments, and the return of senior figures to more active positions within the firm.

Sequoia’s strategy continues to center on backing both foundational AI companies and high-growth startups leveraging the technology. Beyond AI-native firms, the fund is also expected to support mature companies across sectors, reinforcing the firm’s long-standing approach of investing across the lifecycle of category-defining businesses.

The $7 billion raise adds to the firm’s already significant capital base and highlights a broader trend in venture capital: increasing concentration of funding among a small group of large firms capable of writing bigger checks. As AI reshapes the startup landscape, Sequoia’s latest fund positions it to remain one of the most influential investors in the next wave of global technology leaders.
