SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection, and certification company, has announced the acquisition of CMIC, a specialized provider of bioanalytical testing services based in Chicago, Illinois. The deal marks SGS’s second U.S.-based bioanalytical testing acquisition in as many months and advances the company’s Strategy 27 objective to double North American sales between 2023 and 2027. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Established in 2010, CMIC, INC. supports North American pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturers in bringing specialized biologics and therapeutics to market. Its 27,000-square-foot GLP-compliant facility delivers bioanalysis across both pre-clinical and clinical phases of the drug development lifecycle, accommodating quick turnaround for high-volume projects. The acquisition strengthens SGS’s ability to support drug development across complex molecule therapies, including biologics, gene therapies, and oligonucleotides — modalities that require highly specialized analytical approaches and are subject to stringent regulatory oversight from agencies including the FDA and Health Canada. CMIC, INC. is a group company of CMIC Holdings Co., Ltd., which will continue to collaborate with SGS through its consolidated subsidiary CMIC Pharma Science Co., Ltd., operating analytical laboratories in Japan.
The deal comes as North America’s bioanalytical testing market continues to grow, driven by the high-growth biologics segment, continued demand for small molecule therapies, and increased outsourcing across drug development and clinical trials. SGS has supported the North American pharmaceutical industry for more than 30 years across the full drug development lifecycle, and the CMIC, INC. acquisition joins a global network of more than 20 laboratories across 11 countries, including 10 GLP-compliant sites. SGS operates over 2,500 laboratories and business facilities across 115 countries, supported by more than 100,000 professionals.
