Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg has announced the impact that people have made on Facebook for “GivingTuesday.” And over 1.1 million Facebook users raised $120 million on GivingTuesday.

“Wow! Over 1.1 million people on Facebook raised $120 million on #GivingTuesday for causes they care about. Donations went to 97,000 nonprofits supporting disaster relief, animal shelters, cancer research and so much more. A huge and heartfelt thanks to all of you for being a part of this incredible moment and for working to make our world better,” said Sandberg in a post.

Sandberg said that the company is inspired by the impact that people made on Facebook this year for GivingTuesday 2019. Facebook also saw some incredible stories from nonprofits, both big and small.

Keith Benning — a judge and deputy law enforcement officer in Rolla, North Dakota — is also an animal lover and founded the Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue (TMAR). On GivingTuesday, Benning spent the day rallying his community to give back to the shelter’s Fundraiser through a Facebook Live video stream from inside of a dog cage to make a point about what it is like for animals that live in a cage. As a result, the shelter raised over $30,000 through its Facebook Fundraiser.

And Ashlei Spivey launched I Be Black Girl (IBBG) with a goal of creating a space for black women to grow, give, and connect. During GivingTuesday, Spivey set up a Facebook Fundraiser focused on IBBGives, which is a young philanthropist program dedicated to investing in the lives of black women.

Facebook is also setting up pop-ups in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago through Sunday, December 8 in support of Military Mama Network.
