Shift.com: Interview With CEO Neil Henderson About The Customizable Browser Company

By Amit Chowdhry • Today at 8:30 AM

Shift.com is the world’s first fully customizable browser that gives users the ability to drag, drop, and design every part of their browser. Shift allows users to build a custom layout, integrate web pages and apps, and create dynamic Spaces for work, side hustle, and everything in between. Shift has pioneered carbon-neutral browsing as part of its promise to reimagine what browsers can do. Pulse 2.0 interviewed Shift.com CEO Neil Henderson to learn more about the alternative browser.

Neil Henderson’s Background

Could you tell me more about your background? Henderson said:

“I’ve spent a good chunk of my career building productivity tools for people who rely on technology to do real work. Over time, I noticed that most software forces users to adapt to rigid systems. At Shift, we flipped that. We’re building a browser that adapts to how professionals actually work across multiple accounts, apps, and identities across the most fundamental tool we use every day, the browser.”

Formation Of The Company

How did the idea for the company come together? Henderson shared:

“The idea was born from a simple realization: browsers evolved incrementally, but their core model was built for a very different internet. The tab-and-profile paradigm worked when the web was mostly static pages. Today, people manage multiple identities, dozens of applications, and an endless stream of logins.”

“Shift was founded in 2016 with a different premise: the browser shouldn’t be a passive container for websites. It should function as a personalized command center for how people actually work online.”

Favorite Memory

What has been your favorite memory working for the company so far? Henderson reflected:

“Watching the browser category begin to shift and get the attention it deserves.”

“For a long time, browsers were seen as fixed utilities. Today we’re seeing a growing recognition that the browser is one of the most important productivity tools in modern work.”

“Seeing alternative browsers gain traction and actually being part of that broader movement has been incredibly rewarding. It validates the belief that people want more control over the tools they use every day.”

Core Products

What are the company’s core products and features? Henderson explained:

“What makes Shift unique is that it’s the world’s most customizable browser. Instead of forcing users into a fixed layout, we let them design a browser that fits the way they actually work. You can start with a template or use simple drag-and-drop tools to rearrange bars, apps, and controls however you want.

Key capabilities include:

  • Build your browser   A drag-and-drop layout system that allows users to design their workspace instead of relying on a fixed browser interface.
  • Spaces Dedicated environments for work, personal life, or side projects, each with its own identities and app stack.
  • Multi-Account Management Manage multiple logins seamlessly without switching profiles.
  • Carbon Meter A built-in feature that measures the digital carbon impact of individual browsing activity.

Challenges Faced

Have you faced any challenges in your sector of work recently? Henderson acknowledged:

“The biggest challenge isn’t another feature set. It’s incumbency.”

“Browsers are one of the most entrenched technologies in computing because they come pre-installed on devices. Most people simply adapt to whatever is already there.”

“When you’re building something new in that environment, the first challenge isn’t acquisition, it’s awareness. You have to show people what’s possible when they’re given control over how their browser works.”

“At Shift, we’ve approached that by fundamentally rethinking the browser around multiple profile (professional and personal) management, customizable workspaces, and integrated workflows with the apps you use across your digital life.”

“AI adds another dimension to this challenge. Many companies are racing to bolt AI onto legacy architectures. We’ve taken a more deliberate approach: strengthening the foundation first so intelligence operates inside a framework users control.”

“In a market this concentrated, incremental improvements don’t matter. The only way to compete is to rethink the model entirely.”

Evolution Of The Company’s Technology

How has the company’s technology evolved since launching? Henderson noted:

“Since launch, Shift has evolved from an Electron-based browser to a Chromium-powered platform, significantly improving speed, security, and scalability. Additionally, we’ve built a proprietary web-based UI layer that enables full customization, which is unique in the browser space.”

“We’ve also introduced core innovations like partitions, which allow users to manage multiple accounts seamlessly in one window, and smart link handling, which routes links to the right app or workspace automatically. Features like message extraction and our Carbon Meter further enhance productivity and transparency, helping users stay organized while understanding their digital impact.”

“Our philosophy is simple: the browser should evolve based on how people actually use the web.”

Significant Milestones

What have been some of the company’s most significant milestones? Henderson cited:

“Shift started small and scaled big, growing our team by 10x in eight years.”

“Equally meaningful was becoming a Certified B Corporation as part of the Redbrick portfolio of companies, and embedding carbon measurement directly into the browser. That reflects our belief that technology companies should think about their broader impact, not just their growth.”

Customer Success Stories

Can you share any specific customer success stories? Henderson highlighted:

“One example that stands out is Tyler Clements, founder of Surveyor Sports Management, who has been using Shift since 2020.”

“As an entrepreneur running a small business and in any given day managing everything from bookkeeping, invoicing, and website management across multiple clients, accounts, and digital tools, Tyler needed a way to organize the many platforms he relies on each day. With Shift, he built a customized browser environment with dedicated Spaces and integrated apps that allow him to move seamlessly between workflows.”

“In a recent discussion, he said he couldn’t imagine going back to a traditional browser because of how much customization and workflow control Shift provides.”

“Stories like Tyler’s highlight how professionals with complex digital workflows are rethinking what a browser should do for them.”

Total Addressable Market

What total addressable market (TAM) size is the company pursuing? Henderson assessed:

“We’re pursuing the global knowledge worker with an alternative browser solution, which spans hundreds of millions of users. With a freemium model, our user TAM approaches the broader productivity browser ecosystem, while our monetizable TAM is tied to premium workflow features.”

Differentiation From The Competition

What differentiates the company from its competition? Henderson affirmed:

“We believe the browser is no longer just a window to the web, it’s the operating system for modern work.”

“Most browsers are still one-size-fits-all. Shift is built to be one-size-fits-you.”

“We built the first browser that people can actually customize to their individual needs. With Shift users can customize the layout, organize their favorite apps and profiles, and create dedicated Spaces for each part of their work and personal needs. Shift browser adapts to how you work instead of forcing you into a fixed interface.”

“That matters because modern work and life online are messy. People juggle dozens of apps, multiple accounts, and are switching between life and work all day long. Traditional browsers were never designed for that level of complexity.”

“Shift turns the browser into a customizable workspace. And that foundation becomes even more important as AI enters the browser. If AI is going to help people work faster and smarter, it has to live inside an environment users actually control.”

Future Company Goals

What are some of the company’s future goals? Henderson emphasized:

“Our ambition is straightforward: we want Shift to become the leading alternative to traditional browsers.”

“For decades, the browser market has been dominated by a few default options that come preinstalled on devices. These browsers are rigid and inflexible and allow for little if any customization. But we’re seeing a growing number of users looking for something different, especially professionals managing multiple accounts and apps online.”

“That means continuing to expand the customization capabilities of Shift so users can design a browser around how they actually work. It means introducing AI-powered workflows that help people manage information and tasks more efficiently.”

“Our focus is on giving users more control and more flexibility to reclaim their time and adapt to their workstyle.”

Additional Thoughts

Any other topics you would like to discuss? Henderson concluded:

“I’d just emphasize that the future of the internet isn’t uniform; it’s modular and fluid. At Shift, we are excited to lead the charge in giving people their autonomy back. When you stop fighting your tools, you start thinking bigger.”
