Tailwind Labs is joining Shopify, giving the company behind Tailwind CSS a long-term home while keeping the widely used web development framework open source and under active development.
Tailwind CSS founder Adam Wathan announced the move on September 9, describing Shopify as a natural home for a framework that has grown dramatically since he began developing it more than nine years ago. Tailwind CSS is now installed more than 110 million times per week and is used to style products from companies including ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, Reddit and Shopify.
The announcement did not disclose financial terms or provide further details about the structure of the transaction.
Tailwind CSS is a utility-first CSS framework designed to help developers build custom user interfaces directly within their markup. What began as a tool Wathan created for his own projects has grown into one of the most widely adopted technologies in modern front-end development.
Joining Shopify is intended to provide stable, long-term support for Tailwind CSS and the millions of developers who depend on it. The Tailwind team will continue leading and maintaining the framework with Shopify’s backing.
A major reason for the combination is the opportunity to develop Tailwind alongside a large-scale production platform.
Wathan said he has long wanted the framework to be developed in service of a real product, allowing the team to encounter the same interface and engineering challenges faced by Tailwind users and build solutions that can subsequently improve the framework.
Shopify gives Tailwind a particularly broad environment for that work. Its platform encompasses custom storefronts, merchant administration, sales and inventory management, checkout experiences, order tracking and the Shop consumer application.
Shopify is also exploring new interfaces around agentic commerce, creating another area where the Tailwind team can work on emerging approaches to building digital experiences.
The relationship between the companies predates the announcement. Shopify was among the early large-scale companies to adopt Tailwind CSS and has continued using the framework across its technology stack.
Tailwind said Shopify therefore has a direct interest in ensuring the framework remains actively maintained and continues evolving alongside changes in how developers build software and digital interfaces.
The move will not change the licensing model for Tailwind CSS or Tailwind Labs’ other open-source projects. Tailwind said those projects will remain MIT-licensed, and its existing team will continue to lead and maintain them for the developer community.
There will, however, be changes to Tailwind’s commercial operations.
Tailwind Labs said it will stop trying to grow the commercial business surrounding Tailwind as the team shifts its focus toward developing Tailwind CSS within Shopify.
Existing customers will retain access to commercial products such as Tailwind Plus and ui.sh, but Tailwind is closing new customer signups for those offerings.
The shift effectively separates the future of the Tailwind framework from the need to build an independent commercial business around it. Instead, Shopify will provide the organizational environment and resources supporting continued development while Tailwind’s team works on the framework in conjunction with Shopify’s own products.
For Shopify, bringing the Tailwind team into the company strengthens its connection to a development framework already embedded in its technology ecosystem.
For Tailwind, the move provides an opportunity to focus more heavily on the open-source technology itself while testing and improving it against the demands of one of the world’s largest commerce platforms.
Wathan also pointed to Shopify’s broader mission of supporting entrepreneurs as a factor behind the decision, noting that entrepreneurship has played an important role in his own career.
Tailwind said nothing is changing for the open-source community, with the team continuing to maintain its projects while gaining Shopify’s support for their long-term development.
