Shopify will integrate its Shop Pay system with Meta’s Muse personal AI agent, allowing users to complete purchases from participating merchants without leaving the AI conversation, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The partnership gives Muse access to Shopify’s product information and checkout infrastructure. Users will be able to ask the agent for recommendations, compare available products, and authorize purchases through Shop Pay.
Shopify shares increased 7.3% to $137.92 following the announcement, reflecting investor optimism that AI agents could create a new source of sales rather than bypassing the company’s commerce platform.
Shopify supports millions of merchants and maintains structured information about products, inventory, and payments. That infrastructure could make it an important intermediary as consumers increasingly use AI assistants to research and purchase goods.
Meta launched Muse as a personal agent capable of completing tasks across external applications, including sending emails, managing schedules, booking travel, and shopping.
The Shopify integration marks a significant step toward agentic commerce, in which software acts on a customer’s behalf rather than merely displaying search results or advertisements.
The shift also creates strategic questions for retailers. Allowing AI agents to control the customer’s initial interaction could reduce the importance of individual websites, search rankings, and traditional digital advertising.
Amazon has taken a more restrictive approach and blocked Muse from accessing its marketplace, citing concerns about transparency, credentials, and compliance with its platform rules.
Shopify is instead positioning itself as infrastructure for purchases initiated through outside AI systems. The strategy could expand merchant distribution while ensuring that Shopify continues to process payments.
The partnership’s success will depend on consumer trust, transaction accuracy and clear authorization controls. Mistakes involving product selection, pricing or payment could quickly create liability and confidence problems for both Shopify and Meta.
