SK hynix has launched SK hynix Ventures, a new corporate venture capital brand focused on expanding strategic investments and technology partnerships across the global AI ecosystem.
The semiconductor company unveiled the initiative alongside its inaugural SK hynix Ventures Day in Silicon Valley, attended by CEO Kwak Noh-Jung, other senior executives, venture capital firms, and startup leaders.
SK hynix has operated corporate venture investing activities since 2015 through both direct investments and commitments to funds focused on semiconductor and emerging technology startups.
Those investments have spanned markets including the U.S., China, Israel and Japan.
The company said returns from its CVC activity have exceeded twice its cumulative investment to date, while partnerships with portfolio companies have also produced new supply-chain relationships, customers, joint equipment development and proof-of-concept projects.
SK hynix is now broadening the mandate.
Previously, its venture activity was primarily focused on identifying future technology trends and discovering potential new business opportunities.
Under the SK hynix Ventures brand, the company plans to take a larger role in collaborative innovation across the AI ecosystem.
The expanded investment strategy will move beyond conventional semiconductor and emerging technology investments into AI computing, data centers, system software and optical interconnect technology.
Those areas are increasingly interconnected as AI models demand more memory, networking bandwidth, compute density and power-efficient data center infrastructure.
The strategy gives SK hynix another avenue to identify technologies that could complement its core memory semiconductor business while establishing commercial and technical relationships with emerging AI companies.
