Skydeo: Interview With Founder And CEO Mike Ford About Audience Intelligence And Advertising Data

Skydeo is an audience targeting and data platform that provides audience segments and consumer insights for advertisers, agencies, and adtech platforms. Its offerings span commerce, brand affinity, healthcare, household, and CTV, B2B, and contextual data, with audiences activated across programmatic, paid social, and CTV environments. Pulse 2.0 interviewed Skydeo Founder and CEO Mike Ford to learn more about audience intelligence, advertising signals, the company’s growth, and the evolution of its data platform.

Mike Ford’s Background

When asked about his background, Ford shared:

I’ve spent my career building in advertising, media, and data, going back to the early days of digital.

Early on I was a software and tech sales and marketing executive. I was part of Quigo, which was acquired by AOL, a search marketing agency and SaaS company CMO. I’ve built and operated companies across local media (TownConnect), domain and digital infrastructure (Computer.com), and now audience intelligence with Skydeo.

The thread through all of it is the same: helping advertisers and platforms make better decisions with better signal. I’m a founder-operator more than a theorist. I tend to learn by building, and I stay close enough to the data and the buyers.

How Skydeo Started

When asked how the idea for the company came together, Ford explained:

Skydeo came to be from a unique data asset that I thought was a no-brainer for advertisers to acquire customers: consumer app usage data, which we later named AppGraph.

Mobile gaming and apps were exploding in 2015, but data monetization lagged and brand spend was non-existent. Our thesis was to launch a mobile-first data network based on my experiences working at ad networks.

While it didn’t pan out the way we imagined, the mobile data became the foundation for Skydeo Audience Marketplace.

Favorite Memories

When asked about his favorite memory working for the company so far, Ford said:

Skydeo has been a culmination of my work career, so there have been many.

I’ve loved working with and becoming friends with the top marketers on the planet. Getting to spend time with them at events, share ideas and enjoy great dinners in wonderful places is really an honor.

Building a team of young engineers across the globe, watching them develop and grow professionally and personally has been so rewarding. Skydeo’s a lean team, but we’ve had five babies in the last six months, three in one day!

So many others: our first angel investment, making the Top 100 in Inc 5000, working with my best friends in the industry at Cannes, CES, Possible, etc. Just a joy to be able to work like this.

Core Products And Features

When asked about Skydeo’s core products and features, Ford detailed:

Skydeo provides high-performance audience segments and consumer insights to advertisers, agencies, and adtech platforms. The product set has a few core layers:

  • ShoppingGraph: broad commerce and CPG audiences built on observed shopping behavior across thousands of brands and categories
  • Brand Segments: brand-level affinity and audience signals
  • ConditionGraph: health and condition propensity audiences for healthcare and pharma use cases
  • HouseholdGraph: TV/CTV-relevant audiences spanning genre, network, ad exposure, and sports fandom
  • B2B / AccountsGraph: company, industry, title, and account-based targeting
  • ContextualGraph: contextual and behavioral signals organized into IAB-aligned categories

These are activated across programmatic, paid social, and CTV environments.

Navigating The Signal Shift

When asked about recent challenges in the sector and how Skydeo has addressed them, Ford explained:

The whole sector is going through a signal shift. Cookies, MAIDs, IDFA, walled gardens, the inputs media buyers used to rely on are degrading. That’s a real challenge for a data company.

We responded by leaning into two things. First, signal quality over signal volume. We’d rather have fewer, more predictive audiences than waste.

Second, positioning our data not as static third-party targeting, but as inputs that improve a platform’s underlying decisioning model. That’s where the value is going.

The buyers and platforms that get that are the ones we want to work with.

How The Technology Has Evolved

When asked how Skydeo’s technology has evolved since launching, Ford said:

We started with a strong foundation in mobile, app, and location-based intelligence.

Over time, we built up both identity, Skydeo IDGraph™, and the commerce and shopping side, which became ShoppingGraph™, and layered in transactional, household, condition, B2B, and contextual signal sets.

Today Skydeo audiences span billions of identifiers across 40,000 standard segments.

The launch of Skydeo Audience Marketplace (SAM) has been key for mid-size, independent agencies and brand in-house teams to activate their segments seamlessly across ad channels.

Our internal apps are even more powerful and enable Skydeo to manage massive data sets and data flow with a lean team.

My favorite tech evolution recently was a mini-app I vibe coded with AI to keep brand logos updated without requiring someone to manually update them.

Key Company Milestones

When asked about some of Skydeo’s most significant milestones, Ford highlighted:

  • Staying in business long enough to figure things out. Alternatively named “founder training.”
  • Raising a seed round from industry veterans, CEOs and McKinsey & Accenture partners gave us a boost of confidence and the cash we needed to develop.
  • Earning a spot on the Inc 5000 Top 100 (#79 in the US) was an achievement we were happy to earn.
  • Reaching profitability.

Customer Success Stories

When asked to share specific customer success stories, Ford said:

The clearest one I can share publicly is EssilorLuxottica. Caroline Proto, their Director of Global Media, put it well: “Skydeo’s data gives us a more actionable view of retail audiences and helps improve how we approach targeting across TV and other media. It’s been a useful partner in making our audience targeting more precise, scalable, and performing better online and in store.”

Beyond that, we’ve helped a large credit card company acquire new users at 25% cost of their previous campaigns.

We assisted in growing an influencer marketing agency by powering their influencer campaigns on TikTok with Skydeo audiences. That agency was acquired for $500 million.

26,000 advertisers use Skydeo audiences on a monthly basis. The pattern is consistent: better audience inputs lead to better acquisition efficiency and stronger media performance.

Funding And Growth

When asked about funding and revenue metrics, Ford revealed:

Sure. Skydeo raised a small seed round in 2016 of $800,000, which we spent in about a year.

In 2021 we pivoted into a data marketplace model and delivered our audiences at scale. Since then we’ve grown at a 124% compound annual growth rate.

I’ve worked at several VC-backed startups and seen hundreds of investor decks with hockey stick growth projections in PowerPoint. Skydeo’s the first company I’ve seen actual exponential growth in QuickBooks.

Total Addressable Market

When asked about the total addressable market Skydeo is pursuing, Ford explained:

Skydeo sits at the intersection of audience data, consumer insights, and signal infrastructure for advertising. The combined market is large and growing:

  • Global digital advertising is well over $700 billion+ annually.
  • The data and audience layer alone, third-party data, identity, audience activation, and signal partnerships across programmatic, paid social, and CTV, represents a $30 billion+ opportunity and is expanding as platforms invest more in model-level signal.
  • Add adjacent B2B data and ABM, and the relevant TAM is meaningfully larger.

We’re not trying to be everything to everyone. We’re focused on the high-value slice where signal quality directly drives commercial outcomes.

Competitive Differentiation

When asked what differentiates Skydeo from its competition, Ford said:

A few things:

  • Signal quality. A lot of providers compete on segment counts and manipulate their data for scale. Skydeo doesn’t need to, so our segments perform better for advertisers.
  • Multi-graph coverage. ShoppingGraph, HouseholdGraph, ConditionGraph, AccountsGraph, ContextualGraph, all built on a common identity foundation. That breadth lets us serve advertiser, platform, and B2B use cases without stitching across vendors.
  • Built for modern decisioning. Our data is designed to improve ranking and matching at the model level, not just static targeting.
  • Experience and credibility. We have sat on the buyer side, the platform side, and the data side. We build product that actually fits how media buyers and platforms work, not how vendors wish they worked.
  • Commercial focus. Easy to work with. Fun to work with. We optimize for buyer outcomes, lower acquisition waste, sharper audience precision, stronger campaign performance, not for theatrical product launches.

Future Goals

When discussing Skydeo’s future goals, Ford explained:

We have a few priorities:

  1. Deepen the platform partnerships, being a default signal source for ranking and matching at major adtech and media platforms.
  2. Acquire data and tech companies. We’ve been growing organically for years. The time is right for us to accelerate our growth and use the war chest of capital we’ve grown to acquire strategic assets.
  3. Expand the predictive layer. Move further from descriptive segments to predictive, model-ready signals that meaningfully lift decisioning quality.
  4. Grow the enterprise advertiser footprint, particularly in retail, CPG, auto, healthcare, and financial services where our data is strongest.
  5. Build out B2B and ABM use cases through AccountsGraph for buyers who need company, industry, and title-level precision.
  6. Stay disciplined. Profitable growth, strong margins, and a focus on signal that actually moves the number for the buyer.

The simplest version: keep making advertisers and platforms smarter, and keep proving that better audience inputs are still one of the highest-leverage bets in performance marketing.
