SoftBank Launches $11 Billion Bond Sale To Finance OpenAI Investment

SoftBank Group has launched approximately $11 billion of bond offerings to help finance its planned investment in OpenAI, according to Reuters. The Japanese investment company is marketing about $10 billion of dollar-denominated bonds alongside a roughly €1 billion offering. SoftBank intends to use the proceeds primarily to fund its $10 billion commitment to OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT.

If completed as planned, the financing could become the largest Asia-Pacific bond transaction outside the financial sector. The size reflects the extraordinary amount of capital flowing into artificial intelligence companies and the infrastructure supporting them.

SoftBank has increasingly concentrated its strategy around AI. The company’s holdings include semiconductor designer Arm, and it has pursued investments spanning AI models, chips, data centers, robotics and energy infrastructure.

The OpenAI commitment gives SoftBank direct exposure to one of the most valuable private technology companies in the world. However, it also increases the company’s financial exposure to a capital-intensive business that is spending heavily on computing infrastructure, model development, and talent.

Bond financing allows SoftBank to fund the investment without immediately selling strategic holdings or issuing a large amount of new equity. It also adds debt and interest expenses at a time when borrowing costs remain elevated.

Investor demand will provide an important indication of how credit markets view SoftBank’s AI strategy. Strong participation could show that bondholders remain comfortable financing large technology investments despite concerns about AI valuations, uncertain profitability and the growing use of debt throughout the sector.

The transaction also highlights the expanding connection between private AI companies and public credit markets. OpenAI’s growth increasingly depends on funding not only from equity investors, but also from corporations capable of raising billions of dollars through bonds and other financing structures.

SoftBank’s ability to generate returns from the OpenAI investment will ultimately depend on whether the company can translate ChatGPT’s adoption into revenue sufficient to support its enormous computing and development costs.
