Cullen Childress’ Background

When asked about his professional background and the experiences that shaped his approach to product leadership, Childress shared:
I am the interim CEO at SolarWinds, and my background has really been shaped by working across a mix of startups and larger technology companies in roles spanning wireless, e-commerce, enterprise software, and conversational AI.
Before SolarWinds, I led product organizations at companies like Atlassian, Groupon, Polycom, and Qualcomm, leading a few different product divisions. I also started two software companies, which is where I first learned how to take innovative concepts and build the execution discipline required to scale them.
Across all of that, the common thread for me has been figuring out how to simplify complexity and solve real problems for customers, sometimes by thinking creatively about how to apply operating primitives from the past in new and unique ways.
That perspective has really shaped how I think about product leadership. It’s equal parts customer focus, technical understanding, and the ability to approach problem-solving in unique ways.
How AI Is Reshaping IT
When asked how AI is changing the roles and responsibilities of IT teams within modern organizations, Childress explained:
AI is fundamentally changing the physics of IT. I think it’s important to have a conversation about what that means because the industry tends to either oversell it or undersell it.
The role of the network engineer, the IT administrator, and the database administrator are not going away. But they are being reshaped in ways that I think are actually more interesting, not less.
The high-frequency, high-toil work, including alert triage, configuration audits, and routine approvals, is exactly the kind of work agentic systems are being built to absorb.
Not because those tasks don’t matter, but because they shouldn’t require a skilled engineer’s full attention every time.
When you free someone from that loop, you don’t eliminate their role. You elevate it. They are determining where the agent can act autonomously and where human judgment is non-negotiable.
That’s a fundamentally different and more strategic job.
Risks Of Sidelining IT Talent
When asked why sidelining IT professionals in the age of AI could ultimately backfire for businesses, Childress noted:
There is a dangerous misconception that because AI and SaaS make technology feel easy, IT is no longer a primary strategic role.
Sidelining your technologists results in a total loss of oversight, where departments duplicate tools, waste massive levels of budget and productivity, and completely isolate critical business data.
In a complex, modern ecosystem, treating technology as a self-managing utility is a direct path to operational failure.
Without dedicated IT professionals who have the full context needed to manage the underlying architecture, organizations can quickly suffer severe, systemic outages that directly affect customers and erode market trust.
I push back on the framing that IT professionals need to justify their existence in the era of AI. The real question is whether organizations are going to invest in helping their technical teams make that shift.
It is a shift from execution to orchestration and from fixing to teaching systems how to fix.
That is the fundamental pivot point. The industry has moved from AI-assisted humans to human-assisted AI, and IT professionals are the ones who understand the architecture well enough to make that relationship actually work.
Those are the organizations that will be dramatically more effective.
The Human Value Of IT
When asked what unique value human technologists provide that AI alone cannot replicate, Childress emphasized:
AI brings the data, but it lacks the critical context, empathy, and cultural intuition that define a great IT organization.
Our users could achieve 100% uptime, but if they are having a frustrating experience, we have still fundamentally failed.
Human technologists bring a helper attitude and a level of accessibility that AI cannot replicate, acting as user experience specialists who understand how complex architectural changes actually affect a person’s workday.
We will continue to see AI teammates narrow the gap between the rigid, old bots we are all used to and the proactive intelligence science fiction has promised us.
But I believe that in a world where anything can be generated, the human experience will become our greatest differentiator to customers, along with the foundational relationships we run on.
Ultimately, it takes a human perspective to build true operational resilience and ensure that technology directly serves the organization’s broader culture and strategic goals.
Technology’s Strategic Value
When asked to share an example of transforming an IT system, product, or enterprise workflow and how it shaped his view of technology’s strategic value, Childress reflected:
One of the consistent themes across my career has been working on systems and workflows that sit at the center of how organizations operate, particularly in enterprise software where modern IT teams are the primary users.
Early on, what stood out to me was how even small changes in workflow design could have an outsized impact on how teams maintain operational resilience on a day-to-day basis.
Whether it was improving how users interacted with a platform or reducing friction in a critical workflow, you quickly learn that technology isn’t just about features. It’s about cutting through the noise to enable faster, proactive outcomes across the business.
Creating cleaner, automated workflows is ultimately what enables teams to shift away from manual firefighting, and that lesson has never left me.
That perspective really shaped how I think about product strategy today. In enterprise environments especially, the true value of technology comes from how seamlessly it connects people, data, and processes, not just from automation in isolation.
I’ve said it before, and I believe it deeply: Tools alone don’t make an organization resilient. The biggest leaps in maturity happen when people, processes, and technology are unified into a single pane of glass.

When asked about the most common mistakes organizations make while integrating AI into their IT operations, Childress detailed:
The biggest mistake I see is the ostrich mentality. Some teams are so intimidated by the rapid evolution of technology that they just shut down and refuse to look at it.
But if you do not get out in front of this shift and drive the strategy, the business will simply bypass IT altogether, fracturing your operational resilience.
Another massive pitfall is underestimating the hidden architecture of cost. Organizations often focus entirely on the innovative capabilities of a new AI tool but ignore transactional expenses like API integrations and data egress, which can quickly lead to monumental increases in the baseline run rate.
Finally, many organizations rush into deploying autonomous AI teammates without doing the foundational work of process documentation first.
If your manual workflow is inefficient and broken, an AI agent is not going to fix it. It is simply going to automate the mess at a much faster scale.
Positioning IT As A Strategic Partner
When asked how companies can position their IT teams as strategic partners rather than support functions, Childress explained:
To better position IT teams as strategic business facilitators, we must actively embrace a mindset of proactive partnership.
This next leap forward into automated ecosystems definitely has its risks, but no one is better equipped to guide the business through this transition than the technologists who built the foundation for its current operational resilience.
By treating IT professionals as user experience specialists, we provide the organization with experts who can sit down with business stakeholders, understand their daily workflow friction, and translate exactly how an architectural or infrastructure change helps them do their jobs more effectively.
In the age of SaaS and autonomous AI teammates, being a strategic partner also means acting as a rigorous financial steward.
While most business units focus solely on tool capabilities, they miss the hidden architecture of cost, such as data egress and API transaction fees.
When IT steps in to optimize those complex data flows and eliminate waste, we are directly protecting the bottom line and proving our value as a core business accelerator.
Skills For An AI-Driven Future
When asked which skills and mindset shifts are most important for IT professionals to remain relevant and impactful, Childress stated:
The most important shift for IT professionals today is moving from a purely technical execution role to a business-first strategic partner.
Real impact in a modern hybrid ecosystem comes from being deeply observant and identifying those hidden inefficiencies or architectural complexities that nobody else is paying attention to.
The technologists who will have the most impact in the next five years aren’t the ones who resist this shift, and they are also not the ones who assume AI can handle it all.
They’re the ones who learn to set the boundaries, defining where agents act, where they pause, and where the human has to be in the loop.
That’s not a diminished role. That is one of the most consequential versions of the job that has ever existed.
The Future Of AI And IT
When asked how the relationship between AI and IT teams could evolve over the next several years, Childress described:
Looking ahead, we are entering a definitive singularity where three decades of technological shifts, from virtualization to SaaS, are converging all at once.
The relationship between AI and IT is rapidly evolving into a real-time arms race of automated defense and operational resilience.
We are moving toward a world of autonomous, adaptive malware designed to exploit zero-day vulnerabilities in real time.
In that hyper-complex landscape, IT organizations will rely heavily on advanced AI teammates as a critical layer of automated reaction to intercept threats that move far too fast for manual human intervention.
As routine infrastructure and networking operations become increasingly commoditized, the core of our role must shift entirely toward high-level strategy, security oversight, and cutting through the noise.
The IT professional of the future will be less of a reactive fixer and more of a proactive AI orchestrator.
Even the traditional talent pipeline that once started at the basic service desk is already shifting toward prompt engineering, model management, and strategic architectural design.
Quantum Computing And Security
When invited to discuss another technology topic that deserves greater attention, Childress concluded:
Beyond the strategic alignment of AI, I find the intersection of quantum computing and security particularly critical to the future of enterprise architecture.
There has been a lot of talk about quantum capabilities breaking our current cryptography standards, particularly asymmetric encryption, and I don’t believe global business systems are completely prepared for the scale of this disruption.
This is exactly where IT leaders must step in as forward-looking facilitators.
Our role is to constantly look over the horizon, translating today’s theoretical vulnerabilities into tomorrow’s proactive defense strategies so we can ensure the ultimate resilience of our teams, our technology, and the business as a whole.
