Sony Semiconductor Solutions and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to form a strategic partnership for the development and manufacturing of next-generation image sensors, including plans to establish a joint venture in which Sony will be the majority and controlling shareholder.
The proposed JV would set up development and production lines in Sony’s newly constructed fab in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, combining Sony’s expertise in sensor design with TSMC’s strengths in process technology and manufacturing.
The partnership aims to leverage both companies’ capabilities to enhance image sensor performance and explore emerging opportunities in physical AI applications, including automotive and robotics. Sony and TSMC are currently discussing potential investments by the joint venture, which along with new capital investment by Sony in its existing plant in Nagasaki are expected to be implemented in phases based on market demand. The companies said the investments are also being considered on the premise of receiving support from the Japanese government.
Sony Semiconductor Solutions is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation and operates as a leading company in image sensors, developing imaging technologies for both individuals and machines. TSMC, headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, is the world’s leading dedicated semiconductor foundry and deployed 305 distinct process technologies while manufacturing products for 534 customers in 2025. The two companies described their collaboration as a long-standing relationship in the CMOS image sensor business that the proposed joint venture would elevate to a new level.
The establishment of the joint venture remains subject to the execution of a definitive legally binding agreement and the satisfaction of customary closing conditions. The partnership reflects growing demand for advanced sensing technologies as AI-driven applications across automotive, robotics, and other physical AI use cases continue to expand globally.
