Southworks: Interview With CTO Johnny Halife About The Development On Demand Service

By Amit Chowdhry • Today at 9:36 AM

Southworks is the provider of the “Development on Demand” software engineering model, designed to help companies move faster, innovate smarter, and scale with confidence by combining 25 years of human judgment with state-of-the-art AI to build and deliver software at a speed and precision traditional teams can’t match. Pulse 2.0 interviewed Southworks CTO Johnny Halife to learn more.

Johnny Halife’s Background

Could you tell me more about your background? Halife said:

“I’ve been passionate about computers since I was eight years old — that’s when I first started tinkering and realized this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The fascination never faded.”

“While I was still finishing high school, I landed my first job as a software engineer, working on real projects for real clients. I continued building experience through a few different roles until I joined Southworks.”

“One of the most defining chapters was being part of the founding team at MURAL and stepping into the CTO role. That was the point where I shifted from delivering services to building a product company from the ground up, which eventually reached millions of users worldwide. It was intense, rewarding, and taught me more than any classroom ever could.”

“Since 2018, I’ve been back at Southworks, contributing across a wide range of projects, helping shape technical direction, mentoring teams, and playing an active part in driving the company’s growth. Even after all these years, I still get that same excitement every time a solution we’ve designed comes together perfectly. It’s clear this is more than just a career for me; it’s what I love doing.”

Favorite Memory

What has been your favorite memory working for the company so far? Halife reflected:

“I’ve been at Southworks long enough to have collected a lot of great memories, and it’s honestly hard to pick just one favorite.”

“One that stands out is back in 2008, when I got the chance to work on the live demo for Bill Gates’ final keynote as a full-time Microsoft employee—TechEd 2008. Seeing something I’d built running on stage in front of thousands of people, knowing it was part of that historic moment, was unforgettable.”

“Another early highlight was getting to work with what would eventually become Azure, long before it had that name. It’s when it was still running on a development machine inside Microsoft’s campus. Being part of something that groundbreaking from such an early stage felt incredibly special.”

“In 2012, I had the rare privilege of contributing source code to a Windows feature that shipped in the core of the world’s most widely used operating system. That sense of direct impact on something used by billions of people is hard to top.”

“And more recently, in 2025, seeing our work featured in Satya Nadella’s keynote during the NFL Combine presentation — and then winning Microsoft Partner of the Year — was an amazing validation of everything the team has been building together.”

“But if I’m being honest, as proud as I am of all those moments, I truly believe the best memory is still ahead of us. The projects we’re tackling now and the direction we’re heading feel bigger than anything we’ve done before, and I’m excited to see where we go next.”

Core Products

What are the company’s core products and features? Halife explained:

“At Southworks, we accelerate AI and cloud delivery for the world’s most ambitious companies. We deploy senior engineering teams that cut through complexity, bring clarity, keep projects on target, and deliver working software at extraordinary speed.”

“Our core model, Development on Demand, replaces the slow, opaque, and often overstaffed traditional consulting approach with proven practices, predictable weekly cadence, and rigorously outcome-driven delivery.

We don’t send armies of juniors or drag out endless discovery phases. Small, focused teams of senior engineers – infused with state-of-the-art AI – get to work immediately without hiding behind slides and decks.

We ship valuable increments every week, manage change effectively, and create and sustain real momentum.

This is how we build the systems that forward-looking organizations truly depend on:

  1. Custom AI agents, copilots, and agentic workflows that automate decision-making and drive tangible business results.
  2. Large-scale cloud migrations and platform modernizations that turn legacy constraints into competitive advantages.
  3. Complex data pipelines and bespoke machine learning models that transform raw data into predictive intelligence and real-time insights.
  4. AI-powered software for broadcasters, streaming platforms, sports organizations and digital media innovators to turn ideas into working software and  reliably serve millions of concurrent users.

From groundbreaking solutions for gaming leaders (recognized with Microsoft’s 2025 Partner of the Year award) to transformative projects for Fortune 500 enterprises, media companies, and healthcare innovators, we focus on the hardest, highest-impact challenges.”

Southworks exists for companies that refuse to move slowly. We deliver the software that powers their next leap forward—fast by nature, scalable by design.”

Challenges Faced

Have you faced any challenges in your sector of work recently? Halife acknowledged:

“Like every corner of the software engineering world, our sector has been profoundly impacted by the rise of AI over the past couple of years. The biggest challenge was the uncertainty technology introduced. Many organizations paused or stalled major initiatives while they tried to understand what AI truly meant for their roadmap, their teams, and their budgets.”

“On top of that, broader economic pressures led to tighter budgets and greater scrutiny on every dollar spent. Conversations that were moving forward suddenly slowed as decision-makers needed time to reassess priorities.”

“What could have been a setback actually turned into one of the clearest opportunities we’ve seen. Our Development on Demand model proved to be exactly what companies needed in this environment. It allowed them to move quickly and confidently: experimenting with AI concepts, building prototypes, validating ideas, and then scaling to production without the heavy lock-ins, overhead or bloated staffing models that traditional consulting often imposes.”

“By staying nimble and focusing on delivering real momentum every week, we’ve been able to guide more clients than ever through this uncertainty, helping them cut through the noise, clarify their AI and cloud strategies, and turn hesitation into action. In many ways, these challenges helped accelerate the expansion of our customer base, because we were built for exactly this kind of fluid, high-stakes landscape.”

Customer Success Stories

Can you share any specific customer success stories? Halife highlighted this story, recalling how the team collaborated with the NFL to build an AI-powered platform on Azure AI Foundry that processes and analyzes athlete performance data in near-real-time, enabling teams, talent scouts, and fans to access advanced performance insights more quickly than before.

Total Addressable Market (TAM)

What total addressable market (TAM) size is the company pursuing? Halife assessed:

“The total addressable market we’re pursuing at Southworks is vast and rapidly expanding, driven by global AI and cloud transformation.

Key segments include:

  1. Worldwide IT services spending, approaching $2.1 trillion by 2027.
  2. Digital business services market, projected at $702 billion by 2027.
  3. Product engineering and operational technology services, forecasted at $334 billion for 2027.

These figures represent the investments ambitious companies are making in custom solutions like cloud migrations, AI agentic systems, platform modernizations, and complex data systems, where our Development on Demand model delivers unmatched speed and precision. This is the high-impact space we’re positioned to capture and lead.”

Differentiation From The Competition

What differentiates the company from its competition? Halife affirmed:

“We refuse to play the same, tired game everyone else in consulting is stuck in.”

“While others overwhelm you with massive teams, endless discovery phases, opaque pricing, and long-term contracts that lock you in, we do the exact opposite. Our Development on Demand model is built for speed and clarity: we deploy small, senior teams where human judgment and AI intelligence combine at a scale that simply wasn’t possible before, delivering working software from week one, with transparent billing, no bloat and complete flexibility.”

“We don’t hide behind slides or drag out planning. Instead, we cut straight through complexity, manage change effectively, and create real momentum every single sprint.”

“Most competitors treat projects as cost centers to milk over time. We treat them as strategic accelerators: helping ambitious companies move from AI concepts and cloud migrations to production-ready, scalable systems faster than they thought possible.”

“In an industry notorious for overpromises and underdelivery, Southworks is relentlessly outcome-focused, nimble by design, and uncompromising on talent. That’s why forward-thinking organizations choose us when they need to transform quickly and win decisively.”

Future Company Goals

What are some of the company’s future goals? Halife concluded:

“Our goals at Southworks are straightforward but ambitious: we intend to become the undisputed go-to partner for the world’s most forward-thinking companies when they need to accelerate AI and cloud transformation at speed and scale.”

“In the near term, we’re focused on deepening our impact with enterprise leaders and high-growth innovators—delivering even more groundbreaking solutions in AI agents, agentic workflows, cloud-native platforms, and complex data systems that redefine what’s possible in their industries.”

“Over the next few years, we plan to expand our global footprint strategically, while continuing to earn recognition as a top-tier partner, and beyond.”

“Ultimately, our vision is to capture a meaningful share of the multi-trillion-dollar IT services market by redefining how bespoke software engineering is done—proving that elite talent, radical transparency, and outcome-driven delivery can consistently outperform the old, bloated models.”

“We’re not here to play small. We want Southworks to be synonymous with the fastest, most reliable way to turn ambitious technical visions into reality without compromises or excuses. The best chapters are still ahead, and we’re building aggressively to make them happen. More broadly, we see a near future where the line between a services firm and a software company blurs entirely, and we intend to be at that frontier.
