Spencer Fane announced it has combined with Global IP Counselors, a Washington, D.C.-based intellectual property boutique, in a move the firm said will broaden its patent and trademark capabilities and deepen its presence in the nation’s capital.
The firm said the transaction adds more than a dozen patent and trademark attorneys and patent agents from Global IP Counselors to Spencer Fane’s intellectual property practice, which now includes more than 60 attorneys, agents, and engineers. Spencer Fane said the expanded team is intended to help clients address increasingly complex and global IP needs, while strengthening the firm’s ability to serve clients with matters centered in Washington, D.C.
Spencer Fane said Global IP Counselors brings additional depth in patent and trademark prosecution as well as litigation experience, supported by technical expertise across multiple disciplines. The firm noted that Global IP Counselors has been recognized for filing more than 1,000 patent applications annually in the U.S. and internationally, spanning diverse technical fields. Spencer Fane also highlighted the boutique’s bench of former USPTO patent examiners and trademark examining attorneys, as well as Japanese language capabilities among several team members, citing longstanding ties to international clients.
Spencer Fane said the combination aligns with its recent organizational redesign focused on building market teams with specialized experience, including in intellectual property, and with its broader emphasis on culture as a strategic differentiator.
