Spotify and Universal Music Group announced new recorded music and music publishing licensing agreements that will allow Spotify to launch a generative AI-powered tool that enables fans to create licensed covers and remixes of songs by participating artists and songwriters.
The new feature will launch as a paid add-on for Spotify Premium users and is designed to create additional revenue opportunities for artists and songwriters beyond existing streaming income. According to Spotify and UMG, artists and songwriters participating in the program will directly share in the value generated through AI-driven licensed covers and remixes created on the platform.
The companies described the initiative as a “responsible AI” product focused on artist consent, attribution, and compensation. Spotify said the technology is intended to open new forms of fan engagement and music discovery while ensuring rights holders remain central to the ecosystem.
The announcement represents one of the music industry’s most significant commercial integrations of generative AI tools into a mainstream streaming platform. The companies did not disclose pricing details or a launch timeline for the add-on feature.
Spotify noted that the feature builds on its broader collaborations with major music companies to develop artist-focused AI music experiences. UMG said the initiative is designed to deepen fan relationships while preserving human artistry.
Spotify currently operates in 184 markets and reported 761 million users, including 293 million subscribers. Universal Music Group remains one of the world’s largest music-based entertainment companies, spanning recorded music, publishing, merchandising, and audiovisual content.
