Squire Patton Boggs announced it has appointed Lorena Fatás as a partner in its Litigation Practice Group in Madrid. Fatás joins the firm after serving as a State Attorney in the Special Department for Economy, Energy and Environmental Law within Spain’s State Attorney Office, where she handled complex litigation, arbitration, and regulatory matters tied to economic policy, energy transition, and environmental regulations.
Fatás brings extensive experience in arbitration and litigation matters involving sovereign states, investment disputes, and regulatory proceedings. Prior to her most recent government role, she spent more than five years in the Spanish government’s International Arbitration Department and became Deputy Head in 2021. During that period, she advised and represented the Kingdom of Spain in investor-state disputes involving the Energy Charter Treaty and bilateral investment treaties.
Her practice experience includes investment and commercial disputes, sovereign representation, and advisory matters involving banking, energy, infrastructure, and state-owned enterprises. She has also worked on the recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards across multiple jurisdictions. In addition, Fatás has experience with arbitration-related institutions and proceedings involving UNCITRAL, ICSID, and SCC.
The appointment continues Squire Patton Boggs’ expansion efforts in Madrid, where the firm said lawyer headcount has increased by approximately 25% over the last three years as it continues building out a full-service offering in Spain. Litigation has been a strategic growth area for the office under the leadership of Javier Izquierdo.
