Experts at Stanford are developing a concussion education module, which will be used as part of the USA Football’s nationally accredited coach certification curriculum. This module — which will improve concussion awareness — will be called CrashCourse and it is an interactive program created by the health education organization called TeachAids.
The course is being offered free within USA Football’s online course library. And it was taken over 9,000 times in the past 6 months. And TeachAids’ founder and CEO, Piya Sorcar pointed out that the module’s ability to scale and the used of technologies like virtual reality distinguishes it from other products.
“TeachAids uses a research-based development process to design interactive and impactful learning experiences that resonate with our youth,” said Sorcar in an email to The Stanford Daily. “Our technology allows us to scale our near-peer content much more effectively and reach a far wider audience.”
Plus USA Football Director of Coaching Michael Krueger told The Stanford Daily that the staff has been impressed with the passion that the TeachAids team had with its mission. And the new training program could change how coaches deal with concussions in the future.
“We believe that coaches will be better prepared to recognize the signs and symptoms of concussion and therefore better prepared to care for their athletes,” added Krueger via The Stanford Daily. “Because the information is relayed so effectively and in such an engaging way, we feel that coaches will retain the information and feel more confident in their understanding of it.”
Over the last few years, youth football programs have been criticized for causing concussions among children and teenagers. Research has proven that repeated head injuries in childhood to neurological conditions like chronic traumatic encephalopathy later in life.
USA Football is the governing body of youth football. And the goal of Concussion Education is to make sports at every level and age group much safer.
