Starbucks To Open Chennai Technology Hub In FY27 To Bring More Technology Work In-House

Starbucks plans to open a new technology hub in Chennai, India, during fiscal 2027 as the coffee company expands its global technology organization and brings more work currently handled by third-party service providers in-house.

Starbucks Chief Technology Officer Anand Varadarajan announced Chennai as the location after the company disclosed earlier this year that it intended to establish a technology hub in India.

The new operation will support Starbucks’ global business and work closely with technology and business teams in the U.S. and across the company’s international footprint.

A central objective of the expansion is to build more technology capabilities directly within Starbucks.

Over time, the company intends to move additional work currently performed by outside service providers into the organization, strengthening the internal technology talent and capabilities supporting Starbucks employees, stores and customers worldwide.

Starbucks already works extensively with technology vendors in India and other countries.

Establishing its own Chennai hub will give the company an opportunity to develop teams that are more directly connected with Starbucks’ business priorities, culture and broader technology strategy.

The new location will form part of Starbucks’ multi-site technology operating model rather than functioning as a separate or independent organization.

Starbucks currently maintains technology teams across locations including Seattle, Nashville, London and Hong Kong. Chennai will join that network, with teams expected to collaborate across offices around shared technology priorities.

The company selected Chennai after evaluating several factors.

Those included access to a deep technology talent pool, the region’s reputation for employee retention, its ability to support Starbucks’ long-term business requirements and its fit with the company’s existing global technology footprint.

India has developed into one of the world’s largest technology talent markets, making the country an increasingly important location for multinational companies building software engineering, data, cybersecurity and other technology capabilities.

For Starbucks, the hub is intended to create a more flexible and globally connected technology organization capable of supporting the increasingly digital infrastructure surrounding its stores and customer experience.

Technology has become a significant component of Starbucks’ operations, spanning mobile ordering, payments, loyalty, store systems, supply chain operations and the digital tools used by employees.

Expanding its internal technology organization could give Starbucks greater control over the development and operation of those systems while reducing its reliance on third-party providers for certain functions.

The Chennai expansion remains in its early stages.

Over the coming months, Starbucks will begin preparing the office, planning its local hiring strategy and developing the operating processes required to connect the new location with teams elsewhere in the company.

Recruiting is expected to begin during the first quarter, with additional information on the hub and its hiring plans to be announced as the project advances.

Varadarajan said Starbucks recognizes that moving toward a broader multi-site technology model represents a meaningful organizational change.

The company plans to emphasize communication and coordination between locations while maintaining clear responsibilities across the technology organization.

The Chennai hub represents another step in Starbucks’ effort to build a technology organization capable of supporting a large global store network while responding more quickly to changing customer and employee needs.

By adding an internal technology operation in one of the world’s largest technology talent markets, Starbucks is positioning itself to develop additional capabilities closer to its own organization while creating stronger connections between engineering teams and the business functions they support.
